Brunch can be classified as a hobby here in Portland and Cafe Nell is definitely has a following for this hobby. You must start with the cornbread muffins with jalapeno butter, every thing melds together in your mouth and leave you happily satisfied. Sausage and sage has comes out in a casserole dish with ingredients that compliment each other but do not mush together to leave each indistinguishable from one another. The eggs benedict are offered in 2-3 ways, each sounding wonderfully tempting, the kids devoured the chocolate chip pancakes that had the perfect amount of chips to pancake ratio. The brunch atmosphere is lively, the service is attentive and the food is traditional, kicked up a notch!
Wonderful dinner. We had the most wonderful Thursday night dinner at Cafe Nell. The pan-roasted chicken was exceptional, perfectly crispy on the outside, moist and delicious on the inside, on a bed of creamy mashed potatoes and sauteed spinach. My husband had the lamb shank with pureed parsnips and crispy brussels sprouts leaves which was equally delicious.
Lively & Cozy.
A co-worker arranged dinner here for 30+ people, and I have to say that we've had a lot of those as we meet twice a year for our get-togethers, and it's hard to pull off that many people at one time. This place had it all together.
Food and wine pairings were excellent. It was a really fun evening and the service was exceptional too.
SUPPORTS WETLANDS CONSERVATION. Cafe Nell contributes $1 from a champagne cocktail made with Oregon cranberry liqueur to the wetlands conservancy. Our cocktails were delicious, sweet, and bubbly, and for a great cause, and the food and ambience are equally good, and the service was stellar.
Good happy hour. I live a couple of blocks from Cafe Nell and have been there for breakfast and happy hour and the $5 breakfast special in the mornings is a really good deal. its usually not very crowded and its cozy. the happy hour is also really good since they have really great happy hour selections for $5 and under and they have even have dessert, a brownie, on their happy hour menu for $2, and since they only ask for a 1 drink minimum, I can have dinner at happy hour for under $10, which is a pretty good deal. The only thing bad about happy hour is that its only served in the bar and it can get really crowded on some nights, and its a little annoying that you cant get happy hour in the dining room. Which is why I take one star away, and give it only 4 stars, otherwise I'd give it 5 stars.
Lovely Dinner Experience.
A last minute decision to have dinner out at Cafe Nell turned out to be a wonderful treat. We didn't have reservations, but were seated close to the fireplace.
Very warm and friendly. What a lovely dinner experience.
Recommend Cafe Nell.
Super cute neighborhood spot in Northwest.
Went for lunch today with girlfriends after Pilates. It's a really cute place. The french fries are addictive and super good.
I had the turkey burger (YUM) and of course the fries.
Highly recommend.
LOVE THIS PLACE. We arrived at Cafe Nell for a Saturday night dinner, Jan 16th. Without reservations. They were packed, but the owner assured us he could squeeze us in. And then brought us (4) all a glass of champagne to enjoy while we waited. It was worth the 15 minute wait. We were seated next to the fire at the communal table. Our waiter Adam could not have been any better. Very knowledgeable about the menu. And not only was the fare fantastic---best lamb I've had---but very reasonably priced. Nice wine selection.
"CAFE HELL". Cute place, but really disapointed shortly after sitting down. Sevice slow and they didn't even care if we where there. If your in the neigborhood DON'T stop at Cafe Nell!
Disappointed with Cafe Nell - bad service and food. I had walked by this place twice after 1st Thurs the other night and recommended my friend have her bday party there. The atmosphere is charming. It reminded me of a cafe in Europe. Went with a large party last Sat night so I was thinking it was our size that threw the wait staff off?? Then we got our food and I decided to not recommend this restaurant to anyone else. We got our apps and our dinner at the same time. The anchovie on toast was really pretty bad. Extremely fishy taste reminded me of cat food and I'm not a picky eater. I normally love sardines and anchovies. The seafood platter was also disappointing - seafood was just so so. I only got one glass of wine the whole night because I was sitting in a spot where I couldn't yell out my drink order as the server ran past. She never asked if I wanted anything until she brought the check. I think with a large party that maybe the tips included and they don't care as much?? I have no idea what happened but it was pretty disastrous in a town that has some great places to eat. I won't be back unless its just for a drink. The only reason I give this place 2 stars is because of the atmosphere.
