True Indonesian Food in PDX. Indonesian food is something wonderful. Having lived in various parts of Indonesia for over a year, and loving the food, I know the cuisine well. Taste of Indonesia serves it up. This place may be simple, but it is a treasure to those who love ethnic food.
Delicious Authentic Indonesian Food!.
A friend and I have both been to Indonesia and we go here often to re-enjoy the food we learned to love while in Indonesia.
The food is delicious and very flavorful and the staff is very friendly.
Authentic, addictive ethnic food.
I know people are complaining about the lack of silverware and real plates. We solved that by ordering takeout every time. Now, my fiancee order take out from Taste of Jakarta once a week. The owner is amazingly nice. The food is fresh, delicious, and spicy. My fiancee is from Malaysia and knows good Indonesian food. She is impressed, so take her word for it.
The nasi goreng and mi goreng are fabulous. They come with shredded fried chicken that's cooked until it's crispy. Perfect texture! The crackers get hard by the time my take out order gets home unfortunately.
The owner is real cool and takes the time to talk to his customers about anything. Really puts you at ease. I know a lot of people would rather have a more upscale Indonesian restaurant with better interior dec, silverware, real plates, and higher prices - but doesn't Portland have enough of upscale restaurants? These dishes are meant to be eaten in this casual setting - I prefer to save my money and eat here.
Just right spice mix. A must do for any foodie worth his/her salt. The balance of spices is great. No beer? Just have some mango or guava juice - it'll make the experience even more authentic. Can't miss with anything on the menu and the price is just right for what you get. Sure paper plates and plastic forks not of the top of restaurant ambience, but the bottom line is the food and the food is GOOD.
Great Indonesian Food in PDX!.
We got together with other PDX chow hounds and had a great time at the Taste of Jakarta. We had quite a few goodies that aren't on the menu. Every dish was fantastic.
The decor is nothing special and the lack of beer to wash down the hot foot isn't so hot. Hopefully the owners can rectify the beer problem soon! The food is terrific, and at these prices is a huge value.
As authentic as you can get outside of Indonesia!.
I have been craving some good authentic Indonesian food since coming back from Sumatra, but Portland's usually great dinning scene seemed to be lacking this very thing.
I was skeptical when I first heard of this place, fearing that it would be a cheap imitation of Indonesian cuisine. Was I ever proven wrong.
The decor and the dishes ( paper plates, plastic utensils ) were far from impressive, but I don't go out eat to be wowed by a restaurants interior design or flatware. I go out to eat in hopes of being impressed by the food. The menu although fairly small, had several dishes I recognized. One of my favorites being nasi padang. Tender and moist beef and jack fruit both served with a spicy chili sauce, rice and a roasted egg served wit a shallot and chili salad. The beef was melt in your mouth good and was not dry at all. The chili coconut sauce was spicy, but not anything that's going to make you start sobbing. Perfect. Jack fruit if you've never had it is good, if not a little hard to describe. It has the taste and texture of a cross between a baked potato and coconut. It's very unique, but delicious none the less. I don't really like boiled or roasted eggs that much, but I even liked the seemingly strange combination of the roasted egg and sweet chili and shallot salad. After lunch I had a dessert I can't remember the name for. It was a banana wrapped in a thin dough, fried and served with powdered sugar and chocolate sauce. Despite being stuffed I had to try it. Was it worth it? Oh yes.
The staff was very friendly and seemed to enjoy talking and were attentive, but not to the point of being annoying. I'm giving this place five stars because it really does deserve it. It may not have the decor that is going to be impressing anyone, but it's a good place if you are missing some authentic Indonesian food, or are looking to have something out of the ordinary. I will be back.
Good Food....
Noodles are great and Jackfruit Curry is very tasty.
Everything are reasonably priced.
I will give 5 stars if the restaurant use real plate instead of plastic.
Awesome Ethnic Food!. Yes, the place is tiny and the decor is lacking, but the food is not. If you are into Ethnic adventurous food this is the place to go. Everything is good - there is no bad choice. The menu is limited but hopefully they'll expand it as the business grows. The service is efficient and you get a lot of food for the value. Their carry out service is also speedy. I will definitely be going back.
Get the fried rice. Seriously.. awesome fried rice. Very good food preparation and appearance, but impossible to eat with plastic utensils. ONLY FOR THE ADVENTUROUS, but definitely an experience. But seriously, get the fried rice. It's safe for pretty much everyone and REALLY DELISCIOUS
Thank You for commenting our Deliscious fried rice. We are sorry regarding our Utensils. We are trying to change with better fork and spoon and using paper plates. To use regular plate and regular utensil we have to find a space in our tiny kitchen. Please bare with us with plastic utensil until we can solve our problem to get dishwasher in our tiny kitchen.
Thank You from Taste of Jakarta
