What Our Expert Scouts Say

Jade Teahouse & Patisserie

If you're close to Sellwood, Jade Teahouse is a perfect Asian-Fusion style restaurant. Their Chili Noodles are the perfect for moderately spicy flavorful noodles (with shrimp and chicken) and their truffle oil fries are tasty.

Widely revered for its airy high-ceilinged loveliness and vast tea selection, this elegant Sellwood tea house also makes a mean bowl of beef pho. Get the bright green Vietnamese wedding cake for dessert.

Best green papaya salad in town. Shredded papaya tossed with veggies, Thai chiles, and whole peanuts, then doused with a dressing with hints of tamarind and lime. Comes with a side of grilled shrimp and a heap of sticky rice for a satisfying meal.

Fabulous!. I just wanted to show my support for Jade. I've been living in Portland for a year and a half and people have been very willing to take me to wonderful places to eat. Jade has out shone every other restaurant I've been to. The food is simply yummy! Fresh and bursting with flavor. The staff have always been friendly and very helpful, even when I've asked for a bit more of something to take home: ]

Wonderful!

Don't Linger. Usually I can't say enough good things about Jade and their food. But today, I had a surprisingly unpleasant experience there.

I arrived before the lunch rush and ordered lunch and a large pot of tea. I planned to study a bit while I ate. After finishing lunch, and enjoying my tea, the restaurant became busier. I was there about an hour, and the owner asked me to leave, stating that there was a 30 minute limit on tables only ordering tea. I told her I already ordered my lunch, and was finishing my tea, and that I planned to order some dessert after the line declined. However, I told her that I would be happy to leave if she did not want my business. She essentially indicated that if I wanted to order more food, then I would be welcome to stay, but otherwise, I need to finish so she could make room for other (paying) customers. Given that I wasn't there an inordinate amount of time, and I had not even finished what I ordered, I was surprised by how eager she was to push me out the door.

I understand that popular businesses struggle with managing a lunch rush, I just feel like there is a more tactful way to handle such situations. I am really appalled by the service and I feel that the owner's approach was extremely unprofessional. I don't have plans to return, which is unfortunate, because I like their food and I live in the neighborhood. My advice - - great food, don't expect to linger or you may be pushed out the door before you're finished.

Good Food, Service is Horrible. First off, Jade Teahouse is having an identity crisis... They simply need to decide if they are a teahouse with food or a restaurant with tea.

The food was excellent but the service was absolutely horrible. You have to get your own silverware half of which was dirty. No help even when we were with a little child.

So Jade people if you are reading this... you have amazing potential just pull it together make a little more effort - like clean silverware and make your patrons feel welcome. Even if its just napkins on the table with some silverware, that would work for me.

Do this and this rating will go up to at least 4 stars.

Really good!!!. I have been several times and my only complaint is the line you have to wait in. This place is simply too small for the number of people eating there during prime time! To me that a good thing. Fresh and affordable, this place consistently makes good food.

Best place ever!. I love, love, love Jade Teahouse!

The Vietnamese meatball sandwich (banh mi style) is the best I've ever had. Try the Pho, try the coconut rice noodle soup. Everything is delicious.

Oh, and be sure and order the truffle fries for the table - you will not be disappointed.

And the people are so nice. There's April, Josh, Lucy, and Mark; it's a family business.

Feels like home. There's a lot we love about Jade. The homestyle Southeast asian cuisine, truffle fries, the bahn mi, the family friendliness. It's our go to spot pretty much anytime we're hungry. Admittedly it's sort of an addiction.

It started about a year ago. We were in the neighborhood grabbing lunch at Garden State and stopped in for tea. April and my wife hit it off immediately. A few weeks later we were back for Vietnamese sandwiches.

Then it was the Hum Bao, then the Snapper and the grilled eggplant, then for months I was hooked on the Yellow Chicken Curry.

They've made it the type of place where you want to linger, to chill. It's become the neighborhood hangout spot, and now that we live in the area we're hear even more often.

My latest addiction's been the fresh wide noodles, essentially a Pad See Ew, but better. That, that and the udon.

Ha, and I haven't even started on the tea and desserts. Yes, addicted to those too. It's weird confessing all this, I just think it's about time someone gave this joint the love it deserves.

Amazing Food & Ambience. I can't say enough good things about this place! I saw it written up in the A &E and decided to check it out. The menu is mouthwatering with lots of great choices. Everything seems to be made fresh and the portions are large. The beef noodle soup (Pho) is to die for. The baguettes and pasteries are all made in-house. There is an awesome tea menu for the tea lovers. The place is beautifully decorated with calming colors and bamboo. I will keep coming back!

Terrible service and food!. My friend and I were eating at a Thai restaurant across the street from Jade and watched as people flocked into Jade. This struck our interest and the next day, we tried Jade for lunch. I can not emphasize enough just how disappointed we were in the food, the service and the entire experience. We will NEVER go back.
