Tips for Max's Brew Pub

February 08, 2013

A great, unassuming brewpub in Tigard's tiny downtown. We'd had their beers before at various local brew fests, and were always pleasantly surprised. The IPA was very tasty, lots of hop flavor and a complex mouthfeel, yet only 5.5% ABV. And during happy hour, only $2.50/pint!

It's definitely family-friendly, and the food was a cut above typical pub grub. Had a good cobb salad and the happy-hour mac & cheese, which was enough for hubby and I to share. Very tasty and creamy, although it does not come served in a crock with a crusty top like I was hoping.

great local pub that is just there to help community happen. They always accommodate for any group. This is the best place place to go in Tigard. There staff is always great and there food and beer is quality.

Love this neighborhood pub. I have to say that I was completely shocked to see that this pub only had a 2 star rating! Reading these reviews, it doesn't even sound like the same place! Max's has a great, local pub atmosphere. It is a fantastic place to go with family and friends alike. Yes, there are chldren, but in my experience, they are not screaming and running around the restaurant! They have an area to play so that their parents can sit close by and watch them. I have always had good service and good experiences there. The food is always consistent and the beer is fantasitc! I highly recommend this friendly neighborhood pub!!!

Want rude staff and gratuity added to your bill? Come here. I was pretty disappointed with this place. I can't believe I lived in Tigard and never went to it. Perhaps, it was because I was subconsciously avoiding it.

First, let me tell you that one of the ladies that works there, is really rude and automatically presumes you're her friend and calls you by your first name as soon as she finds that out. She must have overheard one of my friends say it. Hmm...hello? Do I know you? That's creepy. Could you please keep your distance and stop harassing us every minute? We are not "working" on our food, we are eating it.

But let's look past that. Food? check. Beer? check. Loud? Check. Must have had something to do with the number of kids that were running around.

Anyways, with a semi satisfied feeling we get ready to pay. It turns out that this place does not print an itemized check for you AND on top of that they add an 18% gratuity automatically. How nice ! Being called by name is a little creepy on its own but add the cost of a burger and a beer to $18...Why do I feel ripped off? I am all for supporting local businesses but only if they are competitive in their pricing, not outrageous.

I guess some places speak for themselves. Will never go there again.

I have been waiting for this...zero stars. I am so happy to finally be able to write a review. Max's has been open for at least two years now, maybe longer, and I had such a horrific experience there that I periodically check city search to see if I can post a review about it....now I can. I was super excited when Max's opened up because the Brewmaster, Max, had a different place by Fryer Tuck's with amazing beer. I would go there and chat it up with him and try all the yummy beer. When he opened his restaurant I was really looking forward to the beer and the food. Oh my god what a huge disappointment. The beer is NOT the same, the food sucked, and worst of all the wait staff accused several people in our party of trying to skip out on the check, even after we showed her receipts for their beer and food. The server had closed out the bills herself! She followed us out of the restaurant yelling accusations at us! The owner came out to calm her down, and then took her side! Even after he saw the receipts. We ended up leaving after a 20 minute conversation with the owner, but he still didn't believe my friends had paid. I called the restaurant and left a message for Max to tell him what happened, and he never called back. I have not been back since, and frankly I'm shocked the place is still in business. Why do people go there for crappy beer, crappy food, screaming kids, and rude service?

Changing ... and not for the good. I originally wrote this review awhile ago so I am editing it. This place now has a 2 star rating vs. my original 3 stars. The staff is not as attentive, the place is noiser (why the screaming kids, blaring TV's and music all at the same time??)

We have been going to Max's since it opened. and The atmosphere is rather odd - though they did finally get rid of some of the lights. It had been way too bright for a pub.

I don't understand the kid area. We try to sit as far away as possible. Maybe there should be a section of seating specifically for families with young kids?

Great place for families and singles alike. I've gone there numerous times since they have opened and it has been fun to watch Max's evolve from a new restaurant with growing pains into a great, wonderful place to dine and visit with friends. They have a great little play area for kids that keeps them pretty entertained. They also have a nice comfy couch in the front of the restaurant to relax as well as plenty of seating in the front, back and outside when the weather is nice. It's a great neighborhood place and their menu has really grown since they first opened. I would highly recommend this place. The only downside is that service is slow sometimes, I think because of insufficient staffing, not because the staff doesn't give a hoot. And slow service would not be a problem for us if we didn't have small children but with kids you don't have as much time to wait...unfortunately.
