What Our Expert Scouts Are Saying

Hale Pele
Stiff drinks, South Pacific swag, and banana sauce-swamped koloko moco—it’s hard to resist the kitschy allure of this revamped NE Broadway tiki bar, where delightfully over the top décor is tempered by some serious cocktails—some so serious they come with tippling restrictions, like the rummy Zombie, a powerful mystery concoction with a two-per-patron limit. Relax in a grenadine-colored booth, contemplate the (genuine) blowfish lamps, and soak up a few 151 Swizzles in Pele’s tempestuous honor.

Sometimes you just need to hunker down in a tiki lounge (like when you check ticket prices for Hawaii and do the math and realize that's a LOT of Mai Tais), and this one will do, with its comfortingly kitschy decor, strong cocktails, and daily happy hour (5-6pm). They serve Sunday Brunch too--think grilled Hawaiian bread with guava jam, coconut waffles, and kimchi scrambles.

If you enter Hale Pele at five in the evening to the sounds of thunderstorms and a gentle rain falling off the thatched roof into the small pool displays at the front--you're in luck! It's happy hour. While it's easy for the cocktails (try the Jet Pack and the Boo Loo) to steal the show, their food menu refuses to take a supporting role. The noodles, vegetables, and meat dishes are all island-inspired, creating the complete tiki bar experience.

It's always a good time for a tiki drink! Unlike the sugary concoctions most places slop together, the folks here make well balanced, rummy, boozy, flaming goblets of deliciousness! Tiki, tiki, tiki!
