What Our Expert Scouts Say

Por Que No
March 05, 2013

People are "loco' for this tasty, colorful Mexican eatery. Lines are long but everyone is familiar with the popularity of this joint and people usually eat and move on. My fellow scouts have spoken about the delicious food and I agree. For those who haven't eaten here, here's the skinny on the ordering process. Pick up a menu on the way in, peruse -everything is excellent, get in line & order THEN ( and only then) you may find a seat. Your food will be delivered to you.

Adorable, colorful decor meets sustainably-sourced Mexican food by and for gringos (affectionately, of course). Long lines await you, but the atmosphere inside pays off. Check out the under-the-radar brunch menu.

The lines never seem to let up at these wildly popular, wildly colorful taquerias. Icy margaritas and Micheladas, tasty tacos crafted with local and sustainable meats and produce, and heated year-round patios make for a spirits-lifting mini-vacation.

The tacos are amazing. There are four different tacos that I like. Good margaritas too. Would recommend going during the week, as the lines can get really long on evenings and weekends.

Tasty Food, Great Atmosphere. There's a lovely worn-in feel that Por Que No? has established, despite the fact their Hawthorne location has only been there for a couple of years. Around dinner time, a line stretches out the door, embarrassing any nearby restaurant. Is it just a trend? No. It's really tasty.

Homemade chips and tortillas, fresh juices and cocktails, bright and flavorful salsas, and lots of happy eating people. What's not to love? As someone that needs to eat a strict gluten-free diet, I can eat almost anything here. The tortillas and chips are corn, the breading on the fish is rice flour, and the cocktails are delicious.

Friendly, upbeat staff make it a lively and lighthearted experience. No hipster scowls, just nice people. The order-at-the-counter style makes for a clever dine and take-off, and after a few visits, you'll realize why people line up at this Upper-Hawthorne haven.

Very disappointing. A fun atmosphere, but the food was lacking! Very bland and overpriced. My carnitas were so dry it was like eating straw. The margarita was very watered down. I will not be returning. Where is the good authentic Mexican in this town?!?!?!?!

Delicious tacos!. On a warm summer evening Por Que No is the perfect finish to a long stroll down Portland’s famous Hawthorne Blvd. Most nights a line of hungry taco lovers extends out the door. But don’t be discouraged, these lines always move quickly and are well worth the short wait. This affordable Mexican restaurant, with delicious tacos, house made juices, and the best chips money can buy, is the ultimate cheap eat. Although the tacos are quite small, and you need to order at least two to be full, they are packed with flavor and satisfaction. My favorite taco is the “pollo verde,” served on corn tortillas with shredded chicken, a scattering of cilantro, a punchy but not overly spicy verde sauce, and lime wedges to add extra flavor right before you put it into your mouth. On top of the great food, there is even better service and a charming atmosphere, complete with an outdoor eating area in the back. Head down to one of Por Que No’s two locations (Hawthorne of Mississippi) for a delicious, affordable lunch or dinner. Why not?

Too bad.. My husband and I have gone here a few times. The last time we called to get take-out and they told us they couldn't put rice and beans with our $50 order of tacos, because their rice cooker was broken!!! Had they ever heard of pot and pans??

Por Que No - Why not to go. Por Que No is the perfect place to eat if you have the appetite of a super model. If you do not have that small of an appetite, do not dine there. The quality of the food does not make up for the pathetic ration of food you receive. Another con is their suggested tip on the receipt (15, 20, and 25%). That is absurd considering the length of the wait to order and that you have to bus your own table. Get your head out of the clouds Por Que No.

Colorful taqueria brings Oaxacan cuisine to Hawthorne.. This second location of Portland’s popular independent taqueria mimics the eclectic decor of the original location with its salvaged wood tables and benches, antique wall accents and punchy color palate of bright teals and deep reds, only in a much larger dining room. The scene’s still a crowded one with everyone from young professionals to urban families lining up for bites of authentic Oaxacan cuisine. The simple menu flaunts flautas, juicy tacos, fresh salads and ceviches. Housemade aguas frescas, Mexican beer and margaritas quench customer’s thirst. For dessert, complimentary lollipops sweeten the dining experience.

quick and yummy. The food is yummy. The service was quick enough. My toddler enjoyed eating a big bowl of rice and beans, I enjoyed the pollo asado porque plate. The guac isn't spectacular. The simple salad on my plate was tasty. My mom enjoyed the special tacos of the day which were some kind of shrimp.

Honestly, there is a reason there is a line out the door, other than that people like to stand in line. People like to eat good food. Given that there are so many great places to eat in Portland they aren't waiting in line to eat food they don't enjoy. This food is simple and savory. Not fancy. And I thought the portions were generous.

not worth it! super lame!. Wow... the line out the door is beguiling! You'd think they'd actually have something going on in there! Ehh. The main reason i went here is because they have mexican coke, and because i've heard that they have good mexican food. Well... the former is true for sure. The latter, not so much. It's not awful, but after a few mouthfuls, and an empty bowl you're left wondering wait, what? Was that a sample? I hardly got to taste it. Seriously. I stood in line longer than it took me to eat my food. Ridiculous. The margarita i had was pretty good though... for close to $9! I definitely don't recommend going to Por Que No. A waste of time and money.
