Tips for La Fitness

September 14, 2012

For almost three years I have been coming to LA Fitness, paying dues for myself and my wife every month (even though she has only been twice). Even though I come everyday none of the staff knows my name or even gives me a look of recognition. And though their sales and marketing machine often leaves me wondering why I sacrifice community and customer service for such a corporate profit centered entity (believe me I have no problem with making money, just the lack of service this particular company seems to have embraced as they push to increase their bottom line).

But still I come, because it is convenient and I know other customers.

Today I wanted to bring my son, who is visiting from college, to work out with me. I figured a customer service oriented manager would see my need and hoping that my lack of complaints in the past (for broken equipment that takes weeks to fix), my consistent payment and that I come nearly everyday; they would gladly set him up with a free guest pass and we could enjoy a workout together.

No such luck, $15 for a day pass (equivalent to half of what I pay a month). I payed it, begrudgingly, and had to listen to my son tell me I was being a curmudgeon.

The frustrating part for me, is not that I had to pay; but the lack of any recognition of my past loyalty. Anyone can deny my request and blame company policy, but as a customer service and sales professional myself I know there is always room for an exception.

Instead of looking at my account and saying, "we make money every month from this guy and his wife and probably will for a very long time if this goes right". I got a half hearted "sorry, can't do it"

Well, it is all for the good, because the economy has us looking for ways to save and this can just be on less expense for us each month.

I am going to sit in the hot tub one last time, enjoy some time with my son before he leaves for college and then cancel (which I am positive will be a big ordeal as they try and squeeze me for another month or two because I did not cancel properly).

At least I can find solace in the fact that social media provides me an outlet to express my unhappiness. Did I mention their in-house radio station keeps pitching free guest passes for friends an family...

DO NOT JOIN LA Fitness. It is a scam & rip off. "Teryn" at front desk is RUDE and MEAN. Read the fine print. Better yet find another gym!!!

Lovely facility. okay this is a nice faciliy. But in this neighborhood the pool area needs some basic supervision which i have repeatedly discussed with the staff to no avail.

The following problems have reached the point where I am ready to spend a significantly larger amount of cash to go to a gym where the staff is willing to address the following problems.

Cannnonballing

Teenagers in packs

People who have no idea what lanes are for.

Teenagers swimming in clothes

Men purposely walking into the womens locker room

The staff blows me off no matter what my complaint.
