So Hot Rod Pizza. I'd been excited to try this place out, seeing all the cool decor being installed as I would drive by. Last night I finally got my chance to try the pizza that would easily put Flying Pie to shame a few blocks down the road. Now I know I will stick to Flying Pie and save some money and enjoy my dinner!
First off, the concept is awsome. Very cool atmosphere, and just the type of thing that a long boulevard full of car dealerships, strip clubs and chain stores needs to keep the old neighborhoods heart pumping. You know it's going to be good when you walk in and the front desk is built into the front of an old Edsel! The place is outstanding with great beers on tap, two flat screens, and quite a bit of seating that was carefully thought out to maximize the limited space. Although for the effort one would think you'd have a bigger place to offer stay awhile seating, rather than emphasizing delivery and to go orders.
I bought two pizzas for the family and we were astounded just how bad it was. I wish I could say it was just an off night but I seriously don't think so. You get two types of menu choices, Detrot Sicilian style thick crust, and New York style thin. I opted for the New York and tried a veggie pizza and a meat.
The toppings were really slim at best. I counted a grand total of six spinach leaves on an 18 inch pie. The mushrooms and artichokes wouldn't hardly cover half of the pizza if done properly. Keep in mind that it cost $23.75! The small meat pizza was decently made, but at $17.50 was no value. You know that pizza is bad when all the toppings and cheese come falling off the crust. Good indicator they're cutting corners to make up for the expensive decor, and I felt it.
To top it off, the menu prices for a few of the pizzas were several dollars more expensive in the computer, and it took a good ten minutes to explain and re-explain the issue with the employee. It's always a bad feeling when you feel taken advantaged at a new place. A grand total of $41.25 for one large and one small. Even with the $4 off coupon it felt really overpriced. Simply put it's Pizzacato prices for Papa Murphy's quality. Sad to say I've actually had better pizza at Papa Murphy's which is absolutley rediculous.
Another shame is the employees. Up to five employees inside and nobody ready at the counter willing to help you. They all seem very confused and lost. For a new restaurant ,a tough economy, and so much competition, you would assume something much better. At least some enthusiasm.
Overall I think it would be a great place to go sit down, take in the atmosphere over a couple beers. They put so much time and money into the place, it's a shame you're made to feel like you should get it to go all the time or have it delivered. I almost feel bad for the owners, as I'm sure it has taken a lot of hard work to get this place running and they didn't spare any expense! However, quality starts at the top, and it just isn't there. It feels like the expense of the decor is being passed onto the customer. A real shame, because it looks so inviting from the outside. Hopefully things change, or they'll be gone as fast as a previous business in that building. Anyone remember Hot n' Now? Didn't think so!
