Not So Bad, But They Will Desperately Try to Upsell You.
This location is in downtown Portland, is on a busy corner, and is really easy to find. I was a little wary of going here because I had read some bad reviews of this place, but upon arrival I was pleasantly surprised by the cheerful nature of the girls in the reception area, and the decent selection of eyewear. I have been going to the Optometrist since childhood so I know what a legitimate eye exam should feel like.
After about a 3 minute wait I was given a basic yet thorough exam by a friendly assistant. She tried to sell me a glaucoma etc. exam for an additional $15, and I refused. After this I immediately met with Dr. Elliott, the O.D., and he was really delightful and full of useful advice in regard to being a responsible contacts wearer. He gave me a thorough and legit eye exam, and was very personable.
At the end of the exam the experience started going sour. I met with another assistant who tried to sell me on the $99 package, but I don't live in Portland and told her that it wouldn't really make any sense. She was pleasant but tried to make the sale, and really persisted by telling me that I could also get a discount on my contacts with the $99 package. This was incredibly annoying. At the end of it all I told her that I would think about it and ended up paying the $69 tax free exam price and was given a contacts and glasses prescription. I did not get the standard trial lenses after my exam that I always walk away with at the Optometrist, and when I asked the sales girl about it she refused to give them to me saying, "we can't just sell one pair to you." That was unacceptable and borderline humiliating. I was going to buy two boxes from them but changed my mind due to her passive aggressive rudeness.
If you go in here knowing what you want and are nice about it then you will only have to deal with a pushy sales person at the end, and will be treated well by the other people in the office.
