IâÂ?Â?ve been a part of the Crossfit. Iâ??ve been a part of the Crossfit Hillsdale family for more than a year and half and could not be happier with it. I love being able to get a serious workout and support a small, locally-owned, family-run business that has a welcoming, positive atmosphere. Wally and Lara have fostered a strong sense of community within the gym but also for Crossfit Hillsdale as part of SW Portland.

Crossfit in general is tough but fun and Crossfit Hillsdale is a great fit for serious athletes and newbies alike; all skill levels and ages are welcomeâ??there is also a dedicated Saturday morning class that is aimed at beginners but also frequently includes veterans looking to tune up skill work. Another nice thing about the schedule is that there are early morning, midday and evening classesâ??plenty for of options to fit your scheduleâ??and it is 100% drop-in, no reservations required.

Read avitevetâ??s review below for a great description of the Crossfit Hillsdale work-out style. Bottom line: Crossfit Hillsdale provides challenging, expertly-coached work outs, without hype and gym machismo, in an environment that is focused on learning, safety and improving your health and strength.

Great crossfit gym. I've been a member of Crossfit Hillsdale for about a year and really like the location, cost, community, and of course the owner Wally.

Wally's set up the schedule so that there's 1 to 3 crossfit classes per day. I have settled into a schedule where I pretty much always attend classes at the same times, and many other members have done the same, so I see someone I know every time I go. There is no negative competitive energy here, we all push each and offer helpful tips when we can.

Each class is an hour and is divided up into joint movement, warmup, skill work, and workout portions. The workout portion can be anywhere from 5 to 45 minutes, depending on the workout of the day. Don't let the workout time fool you though - your job is usually to get through the workout's movements as fast as possible, which makes the workout intense. Everyone starts basically the same workout (scaled to their ability level) at pretty much the same time, which pushes everyone to safely work their hardest.

Wally's great - he knows a lot of drills and modifications to correct any flaw or work through any limitation in people's movements. He'll also stop you if you're about to get injured and push you a little if you're dogging it.

So to sum up, crossfit here can get you into a well-organized routine, with the only variable being the workout of the day. You'll arrive at the same time, leave at the same time, go through the same class structure, see the same people, and work hard every day. Wally's done a nice job getting just the essential equipment, and will be able to safely guide you through a really hard workout.

No More Treadmills!. We've been going here for months now and have been having a great time. Wally keeps the place serious enough that it's safe and nobody gets hurt but light enough that it's fun. Definitely a place that doesn't take itself way too seriously. I've been to different Crossfit boxes across the continent and I still like Crossfit Hillsdale the best. Not to mention that the rates are a screaming deal here!

CrossFit Hillsdale is the real deal!. I've been doing Crossfit for about 4 months now, and it's still tough. You can't watch Oprah while you're "running" on an elliptical and there are no machines to let you crank out dozens of bicep curls in preparation for swimsuit season. CF workouts are hard. They're designed to teach you to move better, stronger and faster, and they're definitely not for everyone.

But that said, the coaches here are, foremost, teachers, not meat heads. The content of the workouts can look scary on paper, but the coaches make it accessible to anyone. I don't know if it was the intent, but a philosophy of instruction and personal development seems to permeate everything that goes on. And that, combined with the intensity of the work, renders results (...substantial ones). And the whole environment of the gym is nothing but supportive and encouraging.

Everything is scalable, and there's always a coach on hand, so any fitness level can do it. The price is awesome (seriously, compare it to other CF gyms in Portland). If you're even a little bit curious, try it. The first week is free.
