Editorial Review for Stand Up NY – by Scott Makin

The Scene
This Upper West Side venue has the look and feel of a classic comedy club. Stand-ups perform against a brick wall on a small raised stage that makes every seat in the house a good one. Comics featured on the bill can usually be found in the small bar area. The mostly unremarkable menu offers salads, sandwiches and pizza at fairly reasonable prices.

The Draw
True to its name, Stand-Up New York offers set-up/punchline humor seven nights a week. Unlike headliner clubs that book longer sets from one "name" comedian, this is a showcase club--where the emphasis is on providing a larger variety of talent and comedic styles: four on weeknights, seven to a dozen on weekends. The flexible schedule allows folks like Chris Rock and Robin Williams to drop by unannounced and try out new material. Monthly shows include evenings of urban, Latino and gay-themed humor.

$10 for a bottle of Corona beer is kind of excessive in my opinion. Also, even though service is lacking, they automatically add in a gratuity of %18 for all checks, regardless of the size of your party. This practice also strikes me as questionable. All adds up to greedy management.

Pros: depends on the comics performing that night

Cons: money-hungry management

I have never had a worse experience going out. The management told us there was a 2 drink minimum or $15 per person. 20 minutes into the show, I was given a bill for $88.00. When I went to question it, half a dozen angry men surrounded and yelled at me. 'Management' told me that I had to pay it or they would call the cops. One man blocked the door while others yelled....it was OUTRAGEOUS.

Cons: HORRIBLE MANAGEMENT. DISHONEST PRICING POLICY. HARRASSING STAFF.
