Sometimes the one place where a man can really feel like a man is the barber shop—big poles, straight razors, mustache wax, shoe shines, animal pelts, whiskey bar and all. At least, that’s how it goes down at The Modern Man (motto: “for gentlemen, scholars, and alpha males alike”), which has captivated the hairy set with its stylishly masculine design, complimentary scotch, and in-shop whiskey bar, first on Alberta Street and now at this new (and very manly) Hawthorne offshoot.
It might almost be worth being a guy if
you get to have your crew cut, straight razor shave or beard shaping at one of these detail-oriented barber shops--you get to sip complimentary hooch while you're being groomed and slap on good cologne at the "fragrance bar" on the way out. The only free beverage I get at my girly salon is water, and the only thing I get to do on my way out is return the Cosmo I was reading. Seems unfair.
