Fred Meyer Beaverton and Manager "Mike". Tonight bought about $333 worth of groceries and gardening supplies (a rake and a thing to scoop dead leaves into), after wandering around store for 1.5 with a bad back hanging on the cart using it as a walker and then going to the sel-checkout to avoid noise...got self checkout machine making more noise than most humans but still managed to scan most of it myself and pack into my own bags. then we arrived at the "green" organic coffee...this is a Fred Meyer house brand and the name is not on the database but the number is. this was communicated by a clerk after Manager Mike failed to understand me telling him at least SIX separate times, I AM DEAF, NO TALKING. the clerk pointed to the code for next time...Mike is either also deaf or severely impaired in some other way, he continued to bark at me until I asked him to stop harrassing me. No help offered to the car this time, (deaf does not mean we don't like help with heavy lifting!) and the Glacier Water machine in the lobby is not working at all, I had to go to Albertson's after this wonder experience. I do admit to hating shopping, but more than that I hate people talking AT me after I've told them DEAF.

OK for Freds, needs an upgrade. Fred Meyer Stores is one of the best department store/food chains in the West, but this one is a bit frayed at the edges. The layout of the store is haphazard and confusing, making it difficult to find what you are looking for. Clearance items line all the main aisles, further confusing the customer and making it hard to get from one end of the store to the other (this is true of ALL Fred Meyer Stores). Recently I found myself-a veteran Freddy's shopper,-walking in circles around the Beaverton store trying to get back to where I had just been. Very frustrating!

On the plus side, the selection of non-grocery items is good, and the staff does a very good job of keeping shelves neat, clothing, linens etc. folded, and everything as tidy as it can be, all things considered. And while the number of staff is meager, those you can find are always very willing to help you find what you are searching for. The grocery section, however, does not have the kind of diverse selection I'm accustomed to at other Fred Meyers in this area, and is not kept particularly well-stocked. On the same trip I just mentioned, I had to ask for 2 of the 3 sale items I wanted, and in both cases they were all out. I was offered a rain check, but, quite frankly, I find those to be no consolation at all. I want my groceries for this week now-not next week.

I do, on the other hand LOVE the do it yourself check-out option. I am on a very tight budget, and from there I can watch the total and add or leave off discretionary items as necessary. I also can pack my groceries my own way, which is wonderful since I travel by foot and on the Max, and when the big strong clerk packs all the canned goods in one bag I can barely make it home.

Overall-Fred Meyer deserves a 5 star rating, but this one is average at best. Kroger needs to loosen it's purse strings and re-model, soon!

A BIT SPENDY, BUT WORTH IT!. This Fred Meyer is a full store, unlike the Marketplace just down the street near Oleson Road. I haven't been disappointed with this store, but we paid $70 for food alone for four days of camping. It seemed a bit spendy to me, but was closer at the time than WinCo.
