Totally Disappointing.
After seeing all the great reviews my family decided to try Lupe's I decided to believe the reviews stating that poor reviews were written by the competition. What a total disappointment! My main reason to try it was because I was craving chips and salsa. The chips were really stale, generic tortilla chips (not even the semi-authentic ones you can get at any grocery store). And the salsa was bland and sweet.
The flautas were filled with very under-spiced chicken...it had no flavor. It's like the people who are cooking have never tasted authentic mexican food.
The only bright spot was the Jalapeno Poppers (perfectly cooked and served with an awesome Raspberry Chipotle Sauce).
Would definitely not go here again. Save your money and go to one of the carts downtown.
Decent food. Decent price. Ok atmosphere. Ok service..
PROS:
*Good food
*Comparable prices
*No crowds
CONS:
*Old and cheap feeling
*Service was ok
For as long as the place has been here, they've never updated the interior. It's starting to look run down. Outside of that, it wasn't half bad.
To die for!!. The staff is amazing and very friendly. Food is amazing, great place if you are driving through defiantly stop by this place!!! On of those little amazing spots!!!
We luv this place!.
Me and my friends and family love this restaurant. When we consider having Mexican food, this is the place we always go to. The food is fresh and absolutely delicious!
The few people who have given Lupe's Escape a negative review must work for their competition (such as Juan Coronado, etc.)
A Favorite!. Love this place, have been going there for about 10 years. The food is fresh, tasty and affordable and the atmosphere is fab. Definitely give this place a try, you wont be sorry!
Microwaved food..
This place has terrible microwaved food. You can see all of their microwaves in the kitchen.
As I was sitting in the waiting room for a table, I was able to see into their kitchen. I counted about 6 or 7 microwaves in there. They had one small grill and stove which they were not using at all. I sat and watched the guys in the kitchen for about 20 minutes while waiting for a table. They had all of the food pre-made sort of like a school cafeteria where they just throw it together. They would put everything on the plate and then microwave every dish for a total of 2 minutes on which I saw was High Power.
Their food is not good at all. It tastes like it has been microwaved, and you can tell because all of the cheese that they put on top of the burritos is thoroughly melted. You can see all of the microwaves they have in their kitchen when you walk past the bar area to go sit down.
The inside of this place is pretty grungy and dirty looking also. Their chips and salsa weren't even good. Please, I recommend you do not go to this place. Juan Colorado and On The Border are even better than this place and they are huge chains!
this is not really mexican food.... having recently moved to the OR from AZ, and having grown up in the southwest, ie Phoenix and San Diego and having lived in northern NM for twenty years, I consider myself to know decent mexican food and I must say the while Lupe's is cute, the food that we had there the one time we visited was pretty definitely the worst excuse for mexican food I've ever experienced...had better in south Florida and Cleveland, OH.
A Hidden Treasure. We've returned to this divey little restaurant time and time again. The food is excellent. Authentic, fresh and delicious. The service is good or bad depending on the time of day and how busy they are.
Best Mexican Food around.
This is my first-time message. I worked at Lupe's back in '83 as a diswasher, I was 13 years old. This place has been around forever! My grandfather was mexican therefore a lot of cookin' was a must. I really enjoy the food here. Everytime we want to go out for mexican food-it's always Lupe's. I've been to many resturants in this area only to return to Lupe's.
I love this place and recommend it anyone!
I'm messing with everyone's sacred cow--or pig, but.... Really, I am not looking to rant--we have passed it enough times and we love a good divey Mexican joint--and went in with those paticular rose colored glasses on. The smell as we walked up was very promising... The place was dirty, and that is not really a knock because, well, it's a dive and that is just part of the casualness of a place. The menus had "samples" of many of the dishes. OK, that'll slide too. The salsa? Oh, I am sorry, sugar has no place in a salsa. The salsa is Just Wrong. Funky chips--and I will not abide with the arguement that you cannot get decent tortilla chips in Oregon, they are out there, I know, and I love 'em--these wierd little things at Lupe's are not good, not stale, just not good. And that poor pig that died to be my carnitas...steamed canitas? Nope, that ain't right. Cook it in a flavorful broth, then shread it and fry it up, that's how it is supposed to be done--and this wasn't a bad day in the kitchen--though a peak in the kitchen as we left would gave us the impression that they had a very, very bad day--no, this seemed to be how they cook carnitas there. The pico de gallo was make from those crappy green-on-the-inside WinCo romas, I reconize 'em. The guacamole was actually good, the service, very good--God love the servers there. So are we heading back? Most likely no--though to hear you all rant about this place, maybe we will--the bar specials looked good and liquor can hide a multitude of sins in a kitchen...
