In Short
Cooper Mountain is a volcano not far from Portland whose only eruptions these days are of the viticultural kind. On its flanks grow 75 acres of the three most successful varietals for western Oregon: Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay. With 40 new acres not far away, Cooper Mountain sells much of its fruit to other vintners--but what it keeps, it treats well.

All of the Cooper Mountain wines that I have bought have been very nice. To get the full selection, you owe it to yourself to go to the tasting room in Beaverton where tastings are free during the week. And if you want to splurge, buy a bottle of their vinegar - like sipping sweet nectar. And worth the $50 :-)

What to Drink:
They make a good Chardonnay that's lean, clean, and bright. The basic Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris are quite good, and the Reserves even better--intensely flavored yet well-balanced.
Look Good:
Pack a lunch: Plenty of picnic tables sit among the vines.
The Extras:
The winery's proximity to Portland, on a homestead site settled in 1865, makes it an easy weekend day trip.
