In Short – Cooper Mountain is a volcano not far from Portland whose only eruptions these days are of the viticultural kind. On its flanks grow 75 acres of the three most successful varietals for western Oregon: Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay. With 40 new acres not far away, Cooper Mountain sells much of its fruit to other vintners--but what it keeps, it treats well.
The Details on Cooper Mountain Vineyards
What to Drink:
They make a good Chardonnay that's lean, clean, and bright. The basic Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris are quite good, and the Reserves even better--intensely flavored yet well-balanced.
Look Good:
Pack a lunch: Plenty of picnic tables sit among the vines.
The Extras:
The winery's proximity to Portland, on a homestead site settled in 1865, makes it an easy weekend day trip.
