Editorial Review for YMCA – by Whitney Friedlander
In Short
The first U.S. branch of the YMCA started in Boston in 1851; there are now more than 2,500 locations nationwide, making it the country's largest nonprofit community service program. Each YMCA reflects the community it's in, offering differing services based on the area. Most include fitness areas with aerobic equipment, classes and racquetball and tennis courts. Many also have day care and after-school programs, as well as summer day camps.

My husband and I have no children of our own but became foster parents several years ago. The Gladstone YMCA was recommend to us by a good friend so we toured the facility and interviewed the staff. We were so impressed that we enrolled our children immediately. Our experience has been better than we could have ever imagined! Not only did the staff take exellent care of our children...they took excellant care of us! As first time foster parents and first time parents, we needed a lot of support and encouragement and we found that at the YMCA. They were so patient, kind and loving, Julie, Amy and Becky are a large part the reason we are a success as foster parents! We have enrolled all of our foster children at the Gladstone YMCA and would not consider going anywhere else. The curriculum is top-notch and the values taught are exactly what we want our children to learn. But best of all...we know our children are loved, nurtured and encouraged to the best they can be...what more can you ask for!

The Gladstone YMCA Child Care Center has been a wonderful addition for our family. We have been with them for 3 1/2 years when our first daughter started there at 3 months. I had another daughter 8 months ago and she also started school at Gladstone YMCA when she was 3 months. I also must say that the same teachers are caring for my 2nd child that cared for my 1st and that speaks volumes to me about the center and how the employees are treated. It's always difficult to make that decision to leave your children with someone else while you go to work, but I knew they were in great hands. When researching the YMCA, they allowed me to come and visit multiple times with my daughter to get a feel for how things were run. I asked all the questions that I first time Mom would ask with no experience and they were happy to answer everything. There have been many times where the YMCA staff has been a resource about things going on with my children (when to start on solids, ear infections, suggestions/concerns about behaviors, potty training...). I have found them to be a "trusted advisor" to my family about mutiple issues and very open to speaking to us about any questions that we may have . Just recently I made a suggestion to potentially allow more communication from the teachers to the parents and they will be implementing it into their daily routines. It breaks my heart to hear and read about people who perceive such a negative view of the Gladstone YMCA Child Care center because we have had such a wonderful experience. My children have so much fun playing and learning that I never hear that they "don't want to go to school". My children have become their children and that is exactly who I want to be caring for them. I would highly recommend the Gladstone YMCA Child Care Center if you are in search of a day care provider!
