Editorial Review for Timberline Lodge and Ski Area – by Citysearch Editors
The Scene
Timberline Lodge was constructed out of giant Northwest timber and native stone in 1937, built entirely by hand by unemployed craftspeople hired by the Federal Works Projects Administration. Its exterior is featured in the movie "The Shining," but its interior (not used in the film) is cozy and cheerful with arts-and-crafts-style rooms and well-lit common areas.
The Details
Rooms are rustic and charming and were designed with families in mind. Lodge amenities include a restaurant, a year-round heated outdoor swimming pool and whirlpool, and a new exercise facility. Mount Hood's peak looms large behind the lodge, and from the front of the building, you can see almost forever. Thanks to the Palmer chairlift, which was upgraded a few years ago, skiers and snowboarders now have access to 300 acres of slopes--not to mention some of the most scenic views in Oregon.

I was very disappointed in my holiday stay at Timberline Lodge, after I had heard so many good things about it. The food is terrible, and the staff wasn't sure what was going on at any given time. It's historic, yes, but unfortunately in this case, "historic" translates into "old and somewhat rundown". I recommend staying in Government Camp instead.
Pros: In the middle of the mountain, great for families
Cons: Very loud, thin walls, had to travel somewhere else for good food

I love this place. I is a wonderful piece of NW History. A wonderful place to go on a romantic get away, or a fun family trip.
Pros: Thumbs up
Cons: little ways to drive
