In Short
The space is a picture of Zen-like simplicity. The dining area includes a handful of tables, a sushi bar and three tatami rooms. Old-school touches reveals sushi as both art and tradition, with beautiful results. Salmon miso poured over rice speaks of a wholesome, peasant origin. Beef or seafood nabe ladled from hot pots is hefty and satisfying. Sushi and sashimi choices include marbled toro and fresh hamachi, both featuring distinctive cuts.

An absolutely terribly experience: after inquiring about a chef's choice/omakase situation and receiving an enthusiastic "yes," my boyfriend and I were served 1 plate of New Year's pickles/slices of fish cake, a cucumber salad with two slices of sea cucumber, a serving of matsutake soup ($7.00 on the menu), and 9 pieces each of dry, unremarkable fish, including unagi that we both concluded was definitely off and could not eat. We drank tea throughout. The bill was brought with a slice of pineapple. The total: $160.00. A perfunctory tally of what these items would have cost if ordered a la carte: $30-35/person. Restaurant Murata took advantage of two willing, eager customers looking for what we'd been told would be a memorable experience. We received a massively unfair bill and sub-par, generic sushi. We will not be returning.

My boyfriend and I wanted to go out to a nice Japanese restaurant so we did a google search and found Restaurant Murata. I love Sushi and finding a good sushi restaurant back home in Illinois is very hard. We had three sushi rolls: the california roll, the cucumber roll, and the spicy tuna roll. All three were delicious! We had water, green tea, and hot sake to drink. Their specialty is their green tea, which they make there from fresh tea leaves and it was amazing! We couldn't stop asking for more. I was new to sake, so that was an interesting experience. I liked it for sure. We shared an entree....the sirloin beef tips over veggies with a bowl of rice. They brought us an extra bowl of rice at NO EXTRA CHARGE since we were sharing the entree. Very nice of them. I know it's only a bowl of rice, but still. The waitresses were very nice and polite. They wore kimonos, which was neat. They have little rooms for bigger groups of people where you can sit at the tables that are low to the ground and you sit on pillows. (Or you can kneel on them like they do traditionally.) With the entree came a bowl of soup that I couldn't put down and an interesting custard. For dessert, a slice of cantaloupe per person. Including the tip, our total was $53 for the three sushi rolls, an entree that we shared, green tea, and a small bottle of sake. I thought it was a good deal, since the food was absolutely amazing and the service was very friendly. I'd definitely take my friends and family there when they come out for a visit.
