In Short
The bulk of San Felipe's business is lunch service and takeout for Sellwood-Moreland folks. The space is tight, but clean. Burritos are tasty and fresh. Tortas (Mexican sandwiches) are delicious and fattening--made with fried bread, avocado and heaps of mayo. The unusual tamale is worth a try--it's filled with chicken, raisins, olives, carrots, potato and chiles. The highly touted fish taco is made with crisp, nicely fried halibut.

Hi, true Mexican food lovers! My wife, Shamady, returned yesterday (3/9/09) to the restaurant - after a long absence - at the request of the new owners (our brother and sister-in-law) to resume COOKING! I REALLY BELIEVE SHE IS PORTLAND'S BEST AUTHENTIC-MEXICAN COOK! True Baja! After all, her beautiful mother ("Mama Marta", who sadly has passed away), the original cook, taught her the secret fish taco recipe - and the incredible sauces - of "lo mas popular" of all the taco stands of the fishing village of San Felipe, North Baja. And as far as I know, this is Portland's only place that hand-makes the corn tortillas for tacos, and grills the flour ones for burritos! So, if you can give peace a chance, give San Felipe a chance. At least go in, and tell her you're happy she's back! (The food will make your day, and your "saludos" will certainly make her feel welcome!). Vaya a dios, Gregg

This isn't one of them. Although citysearch doesn't show them, los volcanes in Gladstone is hard to find, but impossible to beat. A wide menu of great choices. The do some things VERY well, and some not so great. Try anything in a cream sauce, cocktel de camerones or platos. The fresh pico de gillo is great, and supposedly they have papusas, but i've not noticed. Its small, very authentic mexican style - too much color and vinyl - but the food cant be beat. The other authentic mexican place i dont recall the name - maria's maybe, is near US Bank at MLK and Killingsworth, on the north east block, just to the east of the gas station. Support the authentic places before we lose them to taco bell and generic places that microwave cheese on tortillas.

The food here is terrific. By far that best Mexican food I've had in the Portland Metro area. The fish tacos are amazing. Friendly and fast service as well : )
