Get a serious plate of BBQ at this longtime SE Division grill, which smokes up a storm of hearty meats like brisket and spare ribs, as well as seafood--try the cold-smoked seafood platter with oysters, salmon and catfish. Not to strand vegetarians who happen to be partnered with meat lovers, there's a decent veggie section on the menu.

Clay’s Smokehouse has been serving up un-messed-with smoked meats, beef ribs, hot links, and blackened fish for over a decade. Everything here is smoked in-house, and happy hour is amazing: $5 BBQ baskets, including sauce-slathered beef ribs or chicken with homefries and slaw.

Visited for the first time, it came regarded. Sauces are great, that's where it ended for me. I do smoke meat for myself and take pride in it, and felt no pride in the food I was served. A lazy attempt at smoking meat. I left half my dinner where it sat, thinking about my next rack o' ribs.......

Great Happy Hour No Drink Min.. They have a GREAT happy hour menu with most items at $5. You can have them delivered to your front door through DELIVERED DISH which is awesome. Service is good. Atmosphere can be loud at times. Food is great. I like the cole slaw, home fries w garlic sauce, and the Combo Platter. I would recommend to any BBQ fans.

Clays Smoke House. I went to Clays today and the food was decent, for my taste, the ribs were WAY to oversauced, i felt sick after this and i felt full for the rest of the afternoon. There were not that many apetizer choices and the menu was small. I had the spareribs and then got really bad diahreah.

huge portions.
This is some of the best bbq I've had here in Portland. We stopped by on a whim, and we weren't disappointed. Even though it was about 30 mins til closing, the staff didn't bat an eye.
Not only is it great bbq, but the portions are HUGE!!!
Can't wait to go back !!

Worst Pulled Pork Sandwich in Portland.
I'm a son of the south and have lived in SC for 25 years. I have been searching for good BBQ in Portland for about 2 years now. I had heard good things about Clay's but was very disappointed. Here are a few bullet points of my experience.
Pulled pork sandwich comes with cheddar cheese and onions.
Home fries have ranch dressing poured over them.
The pulled pork was dripping with sauce, even though I asked for my sauce on the side, and it tasted like a bad school lunch room sandwich.
I will never be back to Clay's and suggest that other's don't order the pulled pork sandwich. It was horrific.

Great Food (To Go). I'm giving this BBQ spot top honors purely because of their delicious meat. We ordered chicken wings and ribs, which were both excellent. The wings were grilled instead of fried and the meat was smokey, tender and falling off the bone, covered in tangy, mild sauce! The sides were also tasty. On the downside, the restaurant has pretty much no atmosphere, there was one single lone, stressed out waitress, and it was freezing cold inside! Next time I plan on ordering Clay's to go, which is a service they readily offer.

Clay's smokehouse grill.
Clays was a good lunch spot for me, my girlfriend, and our dog. The staff seemed friendly but our server seemed to really want us to pay quickly. She asked a few times then just brought our bill when we were not done with our food and still had 3/4 of our beers left. The other staff seemed much better so this is not why I marked a two star review. I understand the server may have been getting off shift and thats ok, just say you would like us to pay because you have to clock out. I understand that.
The reason for the two star rating is that the BBQ is OK. Not good, surely not great. The pulled pork special was a sloppy mess of BBQ sauce usually reserved for cafeteria style food. There was no option to get the BBQ sauce on the side. Big problem!!!! We also had the gumbo... It had great flavor with a good amount of good stuff to fill the bowl. The only down side was the presentation, the gumbo did not look llike food but tasted good.
Finally the beer selection was ok... Come on guys its in the heart of portland!!! Having said all of this I am not disappointed with Clay's but rather see some great potential so I am going to keep going back to try more bbq. Hopefully with an option to have dry bbq.

Not barbeque.
From the moment I walked in I didn't feel welcomed. FINALLY got a seat, ate , and wish I didn't and left the smell of the place in my mind. Wish the smell did justice...
Expensive too, salads for 10 + dollars. Once again, wait staff was very rude and wanted us out of there as soon as possible. I would not recommend it. Only thing I would tell people to go there for is to sit on the curb and smell the air and the slaw. Although, slaw would be VERY easy to make at home.
