The sushi is fresh, the chefs are personable (bar seating rec'd), and the mood is casual. Put your name on the wait list and settle in.
For the purpose of this User Test, I did in fact have a wonderful experience at Yoko's and would recommend it highly to anyone who loves fresh innovative sushi.
Even the sushi "chef" (and I use the
term loosely) was surly and rude. Restaurant is dirty, food quality is poor, and the server dropped dishes that splattered on us. Apologies? Of course not. "Now's the time on Sprockets when we dance." Bunch of bored, disaffected staff too cool to serve the likes of you.
Maybe the staunch fanboy defenders are right. Maybe I'm just not one of the ones that "gets it". And you know what? That's fine with me.
FILTHY, RUDE STAFF. Pleeeez!!!! Don't give me this crap about how in order to produce great food you must employ surly employes who never manage to clean the place! I have eaten in sushi restaurants everywhere (incl. JAPAN regularly -- I am an intl. flight attendant) and they somehow manage to do it. I'd sure be interested to know why this place is exempt? When you hugging the toilet you could care less about how it tasted..............
The Best Quality Sushi In Oregon State. Yellowtuna gives an unfair review. This person is a born-again princess who just doesn't get it. Saying yoko's has a bad reputation is rediculous, unless it's among fools. The quality of yoko's sushi is the best in the state of Oregon by far! Yoko's in Portland is funky and small by design, fitting into the area itself. The emphasis is on the food itself. The one in Bend is more elegant. I could understand how lesser experienced diners wouldnt get it, Like a barrio taqueria being among the best, yoko's is exceptionally high-quality sushi tho the dining room itself leaves much to be desired and would distract inexperienced sushi goers.
Worst service and smelliest atmosphere in Portland. If you are looking for cold service and a negative vibe this is the place. If the crack smokin' waitress tries to charge you too much.. that's just protocol. This place has a horrible rotten odor as you walk in the door, looks like sushi has been deep rubbed into the carpet then never cleaned. The sushi was just average, and way overpriced, especially considering what you have to put up with to eat there. I expected more. I will never go back, there are so many good sushi bars in Portland it would be stupid to go back.
Yoko's. Have always loved the food, consistently great, but last visit there was treated really coldly by our server, guess cause we had a large group and asked if our table was ready 2x in the two hours we waited. I do understand large groups there are hard, it's a small place. The bad part was that she added gratuity and never told us or wrote it on the check. I've been a server for many years and that's just not cool. giving us poor, slow and rude service, and not telling us she added tip, I'll go back, but I don't think my friends will.
Bad reputation is justified. Horrible service..
Maybe they have great sushi, I'll never know because I'm not going to put up with being treated like crap long enough to find out.
Look, I'm a server...have been a long time and I know it sucks sometimes, but if you can't handle it, go find a desk job. Expecting a server to be polite and helpful is NOT unreasonable as so many other reviewers have suggested. IT'S THEIR JOB. If you are in a tipped industry THAT IS HOW YOU EARN A TIP. I don't treat MY customers like sh*t and expect them to reward me for it or become a return customer. I have never been rude to a waiter in my life and I am very forgiving of a server that seems stressed and ready for the end of his/her shift...I've been there! The staff at Yoko's just come off as dicks who want to let you know you are in THEIR house and playing by THEIR rules. No thanks.
Note to Yoko's: If you advertise that you do Take Out, then don't tell people you aren't doing Take Out whenever you just don't feel like it.
We left and went to Bara's and had pretty much the nicest server ever and a great dinner. I'm sure Yoko is a lovely, talented business owner who just unfortunately has some rotten apples in her staff.
BOH A+++, BOH F-.
I regret to have to write this, being a portland area chef, foodie, and all around restaurant industry professional.
My girlfriend and my self have been dedicated to Yoko's since august of this last year. Frequenting Yoko's once a week at least. The first time we went to Yoko's we were very impressed with the food and very disappointed by the service. The second time we went we sat at the bar, thinking the service would be a bit higher, WRONG! The gentlemen preparing our sushi were very talkative and helpful with menu questions being very busy I was pleasantly surprised at this. How ever, waiting for 20 minutes for a server to ask if we would like water, tea, beer, or hell, Sake even. Is not at all impressive. Needless to say we slipped the sushi cooks our tip, knowing that the place tip pools even. As a this is meant for you not the patchouli doused blond twig with glasses.
Every time since we have had s%*$ for service, and yes by the same stankin patchouli wearing gall.
I have sent many chef and industry friends and co-workers to Yoko's, and evey one of them say the service sucks but will go back for the food.
All in all she needs to pull her hipster attitude out of her a$$ and get back to customer service, as that is how you make your wage, right gall!?
Food is amazing and service needs to change in a big way, unless you are a woman into woman then as observed last night you get your drinks and food in a very fast manor.
All the best to Yoko's owners as they have some house cleaning to do.
One of the BEST Japanese restaurants I've been to.. I LOVE Yoko's! This is authentic japanese food, not the over complicated stuff you get at some places. Very, very yummy! My number one sushi choice in Portland!
