Horrible Bar. The bartenders in this bar are so unpleasant that even an avid lover of shuffleboard and good quality felt pool will find themselves cringing. Simply being within 20 feet of the bartenders in this pub is enough to make you uncomfortable. Save yourself some time and help Sellwood by avoiding this bar.
I love the black cat..
This is one of my favorite places to go in Portland. Great prices, great staff, great atmosphere. Best shuffleboard venue around with 3 full length tables. $2 an hour to play, but you may have to wait to play on the weekends. 2 pool tables, darts, pinball, and video poker. Great back yard with more games and a grill, but it's only open until 9 or 10. The food is far from gourmet, but pairs well with a cheap pitcher of PBR. Think grilled ham and cheese, tacos and hot dogs. You're welcome to cook your own stuff on the grill out back though if that's not your style. The place is definitely smokey, but it's never bothered me (a non-smoker). This place is beer and wine only, and cash only, although they do have an ATM inside. Every time I go they remember my name, and make me feel like part of the family.
Pros: Cheap beer, lots of games, tasty grilled ham and cheese, rotating schedule of specials like free pool, free shuffleboard, etc., easy free parking, and FUN
Cons: My only complaint now that I no longer live in Sellwood is getting there and back is a bit of a hike as it's almost on the portland/milwaukee border. If you need hard alcohol, a non-smoking section, or something healthy to eat, this place isn't for you.
A fun neighborhood hangout famous for shuffleboard..
In Short
The kind of old-school tavern where interior decoration consists of innumerable beer signs. Lewis and Clark students and Sellwood locals rub elbows, shoot pool and play video games. The major draw is the three shuffleboards, which are so popular that there's often a wait. Cheap beer and camaraderie are the main attractions. Food is limited to peanuts and whatever's in the Crock-Pot, but the beer selection is good and includes Guinness and pear cider.
Way Too Smokey. If you want to get cancer this is the place for you- to hack up a lung. The bathrooms are nastey and I wont go back.
a cat even a dog lover can appreciate.. when the noosh isn't paragliding, he can often be found throwing around some shuffleboard at the black cat. the jukebox is loaded with great numbers from the likes of Van Halen, Kiss, Ton Loc and New Kids On The Block. jump at the opportunity to go to the black cat if you're a wild thing who just wants to rock. challenge the noosh to a game of shuffleboard if you think you can hang tough but your best bet is to head home, step by step (oooh baby). the service can be summed up as "lippy," but if you're in the mood to be treated like you just got a bad report card, you're in luck. plan ahead for the holidays, because the lewis and clark holiday sweater party is truly one to be in on.
Nostalgic about your frat days?. Then this is the place for you. It's got the genuine frat house attic/basement feel complete with beer brand paraphenalia, arcade games, and drunken frat-boy types. On the plus side, their beer selection is decent and the bartenders are feisty.
No bad luck with this Black Cat.. This is a homey, relaxing bar in my neck of the woods. I haven't been there in awhile because it's simply cheaper to drink at home, but from what I remember of my younger years, this place is fairly priced, for drinks and food, and the clientele aren't rowdy and obnoxious like most places around Portland. Played darts and had a good time here, I should really go back someday.
