Cute 2nd-hand shop!. I first started going to this shop a couple years ago. A friend told me about it and ever since I can't stop going. There is a lot of stuff to look at!!! Last summer I went to sell some old clothes, while I was waiting I went out to the side and there was a cute Mexican food cart around the corner. It was perfect! Shopping on a satisfied tummy. I would recommend this place if you're looking for cute gifts for friends or...a gift for yourself.

Condescending Owner, Will Not Be Back. I purchased several items from this store last week. When I arrived home, one of the items I paid for was missing. Thinking that I'd left it in the store, I called back to ask if it was there. The item, a small chinese lamp, was difficult to describe, and the guy on the phone (who was very polite, btw) said that he didn't see anything resembling what I had tried to describe. Since the store is packed floor-to-ceiling with knick knacks, I decided to drive across town to have a look for the lamp myself. When I arrived, the shop had just closed, but the doors were still open and the staff had just started moving merchandise into the store. As I walked up, they all began telling me that they were closed for the day. I introduced myself as the guy who had called about the missing lamp, and asked if I could just peek into the store to see if I'd dropped the little lamp on my way out. The old woman (the proprietress, I assume) smirked sourly, rolled her eyes, and repeated that they were closed for the day. When I clarified that I only wanted to take a quick glance through the door into one area of the store, she firmly said, "No. It's a liability issue." WTF? A liability issue? Bullsh•t. I was speechless. She disappeared into the store without another word. I left, fuming.

Dear bitter, old lady who works at Village Merchants: It would behoove you to not treat paying customers like children who annoy you. Screw you- keep the lamp I paid for. I won't be back, and I will be sure to let my friends know about this ridiculous experience.

Little compensation to consigners-owner is....umm...thrifty. If you are a shopper or someone who does resale, this is the store for you. But if you are a consignor, take the advice of the first review and bring your unwanted items to Rerun. The owner shows more respect and appreciation to consignors by paying them a reasonable amount for their merchandise. At village merchants, it is almost and insult to see what they pay out. Considering we are delivering them their inventory on a daily basis, one would think that they would show their gratitude by offering a reasonable percentage of their profit since it is of no cost to them. I can't say for sure but i think even Buffalo Exchange pays out better and they are a chain!

You might consider ReRun on North Fremont INSTEAD!. I rarely write reviews, but feel compelled to write one here.

Have been going to Village Merchants, shopping there and bringing in unwanted (nice) items for years. However, since I have found ReRun on Fremont, I will never go back to Village Merchants. ReRun gives way more for your items, they have better merchandise and they keep way better track of what you brought in and how much you get in return. They give 50% on each item and more if it is handmade by you. Village gives 30% and slightly more in trade. This is a "no brainier," in my opinion. Also, the folks who run and operate ReRun are much nicer and way more friendly....

treasure seekers trove. village merchants is a great place to find gifts for anyone and also a lil sommin for yo self. i have found awsome clothes in good condition, sweet dishes and too many treasures. the back patio is a cool area that while it may seem secret is actually huge and has all the prize furniture.

the only downside is that everything is pretty cheap so you might walk away with an armload

some good stuff, prices are reasonable. this is a consignment resale shop, and i think that considered the quality of alot of their clothing is a little low ie missing buttons, holes, pilly stuff. the prices are good for a resale shop and there is some cool stuff. i didn't dislike it necessarily but there wasn't anything i wanted either. all in all a nice neighborhood store but not somewhere to drive across town for.

Sometimes has great finds. We are new to Portland and have only been here 3 times, but already found a mint 1940s hand stiched and embroidered quilt and a 1920s embroidered 24" round tabletop with hand made lace on the edges. It's a good idea to check this place out every few days, if you can...

You never know what you're gonna get. One of those places where persistence pays off. You might make three trips to this little shop and find absolutely nothing that interests you the first two times, then find that perfect something the next time around. Some of the merchandise quality can be a little on the low end, but the prices are always right, and there are just enough diamonds in the rough to keep me going back.
