If you happen to be educating a youngster about the days when you couldn't watch movies on your phone with one push of a finger, take them to this throwback video shop, where you can actually see, touch and even rent a VHS tape. They got most every DVD under the sun, too.
best movies. these guys always have the movies i want... and i like really obscure movies. i have found so many new favorites here over the years too. if i only used netflix, i would not find as cool of movies as i do by visiting clinton street video !
Refreshingly unpretentious given the neighbourhood.
Staff is usually friendly. Frequently, if I call about a movie (my taste is obscure, probably even for this kind of store), the staff member, upon realizing they don't carry the film, will casually ask me what it's about or why I'm after it. In a humanizing way, not an attitude-laden way. Very refreshing.
I wish their rates were a little more competitive (as a frequent renter) but, then, Netflix is really giving everybody the squeeze these days.
Given that I am moving, I will miss this little gem. There's something special about this store that you won't find when you visit or call Movie Madness or Videorama and encounter one of their terminally disaffected employees.
My favorite video store. Clinton Street Video is exactly the kind of place I like to go to find a movie. The store has a very laid-back feel, but they have a wide selection of videos from the widely-released to the more arcane. Their staff are helpful and actually know something about movies, and Clinton Street feels like it's owned by real people, not by some massive conglomerate. Very Portland.
A great medium sized independent video store. I've always had a great experience with Clinton St. Video. It is not a huge store but they almost always have the movies I'm looking for, even if they aren't blockbusters. Their foreign and documentary sections are solid, as are the independent films. It's nowhere near the size of Movie Madness, and they just raised their prices to $2.50 and $3.50 for regular titles and new releases, respectively, but it's a great store and a perfect place to support in the neighborhood. They've been around for quite a while and I love to try to keep locally owned businesses in my life, so I would highly recommend them. There is only one location, and the staff has always been very friendly and courteous with me.
Sweet Video Store.
they keep their prices low and you get the videos for 5 days!!! They are so friendly and can help you find something even if you don't know the name...the least pretentious indie video store that I have ever been to!
And conveniently located a short walk from my house. I used to work in a video store so...i know they are good.
Top Video Selection, Friendly, Funky, 5-Day Rentals, Inexpensive.
The reasons expressed in the negative review here are not my experience with this store at all. In fact, I have found the customer service to actually be quite good: friendly, unpretentious, and helpful. The prices are completely reasonable and the 5-day rentals on all but the newest releases is just the right amount of time.
An excellent and eclectic selection of titles and hard to find and out of print releases. The music section alone is second to none in this town. There is hardly ever a long line or wait ... unlike the mighty Movie Madness .. nor is there the too-cool-for-school attitude that can come with MM either. I highly recommend Clinton St. Video to all.
an x-customer's responce.......
I use to do buisness with Clinton Street. I did have some trouble with their customer service in the past, which has prevented me from renting from them. I have been told that their customer service has
improved some what. So, I came in the other night to re-open my account and to see if this is
true. I still feel a little intimiated when I was there. Mainly by the staff member on duty. I did rent
a dvd new release and after returning it today....I don't really feel like going back to this place.
I'm sorry but that's how I feel....or maybe the way the man behind the counter made me feel.
Sorry, m.s.
