What People Are Saying About John Street Cafe

In Short – All stripes of Portlanders make the trek here for breakfast or lunch. The art alone, including magnificent originals by locals Mike Russo and Sally Haley, is enough to justify the trip. On weekends there's usually wait, but it's worth it. Breakfast features fluffy, pleasantly sour buttermilk pancakes, mountainous omelets and oatmeal with a selection of garnishes. Lunch features numerous standouts. The hamburger is superior, and the blackened snapper sandwich is moist and fiery.
BAD, BAD customer service

First off, let me say the waitress was wonderful and tried to make up for what happened. It was the manager that was horrible:
My mother in law and I went for a spa day at Malu across the street (FABULOUS). I wanted to "keep it local" so we went to John Street Cafe for lunch. I'd been there once before and just wasn't all that impressed. Fairly expensive, mediocre food.
I ordered a $13 chicken quesadilla. It didn't have a lot of flavor, but every quesadilla is different. I found a small bone in the first bite I took. Okay--that happens, it was small, no biggie. By the 3 piece I found a chicken wing!!!!! Not just a 2-inch bone, but the bone, a joint and another bone! I couldn't eat anymore because I was grossed out. I told the waitress what happened and showed her the wing. She was appalled and apologize profusely. She took it back to the kitchen and the manager said, "Well it's not like we meant to put it in there. It was a mistake. If she doesn't want it, too bad." WE. COULD. HEAR. HER!!!
We were offered NO compensation! I would have been happy to pay half, I did eat the soup and almost 1/2 of the quesadilla.
Seriously? I will NEVER be back and I will tell everyone I know to avoid it. You just can't be so horrible to customers in a town where there's a great breakfast around every corner. John Street Cafe, I'm done with you!
- Pros: in St. Johns which is up & coming
- Cons: high priced, horrible customer service, average food

since they have a small place, we wanted to place an order for pick up to take back to our work.
they have no menu online and they can not fax menus.
the lady on the phone had horrible customer service skills and just wanted to get off the phone. she said the only way to get a menu is to come get it.
so much for Johns Cafe, we took our business to Patties homeplate Cafe, which is a more freindly hometown cafe. it has been in St Johns since before i was in school.
- Pros: none, they make me rate this place, so i have to give 1 star
- Cons: not friendly
