AWESOME. The cajun fish sandwich was NOT very good AT ALL. but everything else has been wonderful. Fish baskets are awesome, and the cioppino is to die for! the coleslaw is good. but the cioppino and clam chowder are the number ones!
North Portland Surprise. What doesn't look like much from the outside is a great surprise inside. They have a great selection of fresh fish dishes and an always rotating menu of Oregon beers. The wairstaff is always friendly and curteous. It is a little pricey, but definitely worth it. I make a point to eat there at least once a month. The Cioppino soup and fish baskets are always a good choice.
The sandwiches need help....
I ordered a blackened fish sandwich and coleslaw yesterday, and was pretty disappointed. The fish was a mess of bright red oil and spices, there was absolutely no distinguishable fish flavor to be found. I'd might as well have been eating bologna or tofu. This was served on a bun, covered with melted cheddar, making this one of the greasiest sandwiches I've ever eaten, and I just got back from eating tortas in Mexico! Red oil was literally running all over the plate.
The coleslaw it came with was also some of the worst I've ever had. It seemed to be a thin mix of cabbage and mayonnaise. Unbelievably bland.
Perhaps their mains are better, but I'm not sure I'm going to bother.
Modest setting, excellent seafood value. We visited the Fishwife for lunch today. Nothing fancy here, just cleanly prepared seafood, crinkle-cut fries that were obviously cooked in fresh oil, and some nice sides - - we tried the cole slaw and it was quite good. We opted for grilled cod and grilled oysters; both were cooked in butter but were not drowned in it, and both were just right - - cooked but not overdone. Bottled beer prices are reasonable - - in fact, ALL the prices are very reasonable. About the only fancy touch was the incongruous white cloth napkin, since the basic atmosphere is more or less diner, but it is clean and comfortable, and we were knocked out by how friendly everyone on the staff was. We'll be back for dinner and are looking forward to trying out the chowders.
Fresh, excelent seafood specials!. My boyfriend and I go to the fishwife normally once a week. We love the fresh seafood specials that are always changing. There is at least a new type of seafood to try every week. The service is always great, and the staff friendly. If you are looking for good clam chowder, look no farther! The crab cocktail is always excellent (it's what I have every time). One downfall would have to be the water is normally not iced, so it's not cold, but if you can look past the water you won't be disappinted!
The Fish Wife is my favorite seafood place!!.
The Fishwife is my favorite seafood place to eat!!!!!!
Wonderful food and friendly service.
I will always return to that place. Love it love it love it.
My Favorite Place. Every Saturday nite I go to the Fishwife for my weekly treat to myself. It's become like my weekend kickoff mantra. The service is always friendly and down to earth, they have an impressive list of quality brews, and the food is consistently excellent. My favorites are the fresh Dungeness crab cocktails and the Cod fish & chips; which is a huge serving and a steal at under $7! Their halibut is great too, but the Cod is my favoite, so light & moist. If Im feeling a little more outside the box, i usually go for the dinner specials; which change from week to week based on what fresh seafood is available. Last Friday I tried the chef's choice, a classic sauteed mussell dish made with bacon, apples, brandy & cream...it was pretty much in the top 5 meals of my life! The specials at the Fishwife are always impressive, and I was pleased to notice an addition of a naturally raised meat special to their menu. Finally I can talk my best friend who hates seafood into enjoying my Saturday nite tradition!
Best Chowder in town. I have been going to this place for years. The atmosphere is comfortable and homey...the prices are a bit high for my taste but the food has always been worth it. The chowder is so thick and yummy. Their grilled Halibut is my favorite, it is so good and perfectly cooked and seasoned. Their clams strips are bigger than I have ever seen and so good. The owners are nice people too. I took a friend there yesterday to introduce her to the best clam chowder in town. She was nervous to try it b/c she is so picky, so the owner gave her a free taste, which was more like a free cup of chowder. My friend loved it! I highly recommend this place.
Rude Service. I called to talk with someone about the menu because I had seen it on a website a month ago. After I asked the question the lady on the phone was very short with me and said they had no website and the person that could help me was too busy to answer my question. This is a dissapointment for me b/c i recently moved to the neighborhood and was looking forward to finding a great restaurant close by. Looks like I need to go elsewhere.
I love the Fishwife!.
I moved into the Portsmouth neighborhood a few months ago and this is my favorite local place to eat (although, admittedly there's not a lot of competition for that honor). The food here is tasty, the service friendly, and the prices are reasonable, although the price on some of the more exotic dishes seems somewhat unexpected for such a "casual" restaurant. It's usually worth it though, and the food here is the main attraction - not the atmosphere.
Their halibut fish and chips is one of the better I've had, they go nice and light on the breading and use quality halibut. It's location near the bus stop on the corner of Portsmouth and Lombard makes for some entertaining people watching as well if you're lucky enough to score a window seat.
