Portland >Manadrin House
Authentic, Surprising! A rare find in Portland!. A friend of a friend told me about this place. I have gone up and down 82nd Ave, in and around Chinatown and I have yet to find a place this authentic. How have I missed this place! Perhaps its strange location down on Ankeny right across from Sat. Market? On my first try I had green onion and beef pancake, Szechuan noodles (hand strung!) with pork, and a noodle soup with piles of mustard greens (very mild!) soft noodles and pork. I also held my breath and held back my yelps of excitement as I saw the words Xiao Long Bao on the dumpling menu. Could it be! Soup dumplings!!!!!!!!!!! - yes we ordered them, and when they were delivered in a giant basket lined with cabbage I bit into one with anticipation. Great chewy but light skin ? Check! Great savory pork filling? Check! Flavorful soup burst? Hmmm. Not really. I did not have the courage to ask about the missing broth- and found the Bao to be quite delish as is. However, this was my only disappointment. I am so excited about this place. GOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOG! there and try more things and write about them here - so I know what to try next time I head down to old town. If you speak- or read chinese even better- I have a feeling there are fantastic treats on their Chinese Menu. Reports of bad service seem out of line, the couple? who were running the place were very sweet and attended to every need. Still the main reason to come here is the food. WOW!
Worst Service EVER. Okay Food. This was the worst service i have ever had while eating out. The staff ignored us for 10 minutes with 7 open tables and no one before us, then finally seated us. Our waitress brought us shrimp when we ordered chicken then argued when we corrected her, the person who ordered it is allergic so he couldn't eat it. Then she brought us something we didn't even order or think looked good, and when we asked her to take it back she YELLED at us and asked if we would send food back in an American restraunt! How RUDE. Then she ignored us completly and brought our check so one person in our party never even got food. When checking out the hostess was STARING my reciept to see if i left a tip and when i didn't, obviously she asked if i was leaving and a tip and i said no and SHE argued with me about it. Ive never ever been through an experience like this ever and I actually wouldn't be suprised if she ran my card with her own made up tip.
Super good food!.
This is a great restaurant! As the others have said, the best food isn't on the English menu. Many times, our group would just let the waitress know what we wanted (example; pork and veggies) and she would surprise us. I don't think I have had anything that didn't like there.
I highly recommend it!!
Lovely Hideaway. Authentic Northern Chinese food. Ask the waiter or waitress for recommendation. A very lovely place to sit and just enjoy. The glass roof makes the whole restaurant bright and clear, unlike most of the Chinese restaurant. Food is exceptional. Highly recommended.
Hidden Gem. A very small, not so fancy, yet curious restaurant with only a few tables hangs like a potted plant with full windowed ceiling over the Saturday market. It is a wonderful place to sit quietly and absorb the craft fair without being buried in it. The food is above average and the service is short and sweet.
Delicious. By far the best Chinese food I have ever had. I agree an interpretter is helpful. The spicy fish pot is my favorite. I love Mandarin House! yum yum
The Real Thing!. As soon as I read the Chinese part of the menu, I knew it was the real thing. They are the real dishes that you will find in a restaurant in China, and they taste like it too. The food is in northern Chinese style, which is less sweet and more flavourful (at least I think so). The place is clean, the service is good, only the location is a bit hard to find.
Should be in the top 10!. Food is delicious. We enjoyed it more in restaurant than when we picked up once. Great Potstickers. Friendly staff.
Bring a translator. Fortunately in our party we had a person who could speak Chinese. Most of the really good stuff is not on the menu in English. The dishes tasted authentic and were very flavorful with many vegetarian options. However dining in with a large party warranted a trip to Burgerville since the portions are not that big. The staff is very friendly and the place is very clean despite the area of town. Xie Xie
