In Short – The storefront gazes out at the busy streets of downtown with a quiet, knowing eye. Inside, classical music skips lightly over stacks of books, and the comforting dimness encourages a languid browse. The selection of new books ranges from literature to science, and the magazine rack houses an array of current periodicals. If you're wavering between Kerouac and Kipling, look for the friendly-faced soul perched behind the front desk.
My favorite bookstore in Portland!

I adore this bookstore! It?s cozy, friendly, and has a great selection. My kids absolutely love the children?s section, which is housed in a red caboose! I especially like their literature section, which features authors from all over the world. The staff is very friendly and knowledgable, especially the owner. Whenever I ask for a recommendation, she finds something perfect. Their new space in Sellwood is a bit smaller than their old downtown store, but the selection is still wonderful. It seems like every book in there is hand-picked! They also have great sections in Poetry, Sustainability, History, Politics (pretty left-of-center), Northwest, Cooking, and more. There are nice spots to sit and read, including a sweet little outdoor garden. Plus, they do free gift-wrapping during the holidays, and have occasional author events. Highly recommended.
