Editorial Review for Jake's Grill – by May Wong

In Short
This spot packs plenty of appeal with its distinctively classy, turn-of-the-20th-century look. Think Titanic's dining room with inlaid, mosaic floors, woodwork throughout and stately flatware. Well-heeled, casual diners flock to this jaunt for classic American favorites infused with Northwestern flair. The expansive menu features ample steak varieties, seafood and pasta dishes. Its signature is the filet mignon with mushroom demi-glace but pan-seared albacore tuna with wasabi mashed potatoes and old-fashioned surf and turf are other favorites.

My wife and I just got home from dining at Jake's Grill. It was great! We arrived early for our reservation and went to the bar for a cocktail. It was very busy and we had to wait for a table to open up, we ended up sitting at the bar. The bartenders were fun and friendly, they obviously have a regular crowd as it seemed they new everyone. I picked up the Happy Hour menu, what a deal. 1/2 pound burger for 1.95? The hostess came and took us to our table, we sat at a nice window "booth". Our server arrived and seemed knowledgable as he pointed out the "newer" items on the menu. I ordered the filet w/ mushroom sauce and she ordered the mahi mahi, both were excellent. As mentioned in other posts, the chocolate cake is amazing!! I will say, we didn't see any issues with it not being clean as mentioned in earliler posts. Maybe they read these posts as well. All in all.. we'll go back.

Pros: Great decor and steaks

Cons: Can be a little loud

We always use City Search to find local spots to check out. This was no exception. We were celebrating my birthday dinner. I made reservations online. We showed up, and got a nice window table and were sat quckly. So far so good. While waiting 10 minutes for a server to greet us, we has a chance to take in the scene: dirty old tile floors, paper table liners on top of white linens (very tacky) and as the last poster said - dirty silverware and glasses. The place was loud and unkept. Even the menus were paper. For entree's at up to $40 a piece, I was expecting a lot nicer of a place. I stayed optimistic and decided the food must be worth it fr all the good reviews it gets. I ordered lamb chops with asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes ($33). My boyfriend ordered a rib-eye and garlic potatoes also ($30). We also each got a salad before dinner - me Ceasar and he had the house. The bread and water came out immediately. The bread was dry and not warm. It took an hour to get our entree's. The food was overpriced and not worth half of the value. The lamb was bland, the mashed potatoes were runny, and the asparagus was practically untouched - cold, hard, and barely washed. The ceasar salad didn't have enough dressing or flavor, and was ridiculously priced at almost $15.00 for a small side salad!?! . The dessert was the only redeemable part of the whole meal (the chocolate cake as everyone suggested was amazing). Generally I'd say way overpriced ($130.00 for a meal without any drinks) and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I was really disappointed it didn't live up to it's own reputation. P.S. If you are in the mood for one of the best steaks in Portland (as this crappy place claims) try Echos in NE PDX. We went there on Valentines Day, paid half as much, and had an amazing meal.

Pros: Chocolate Cake

Cons: Everything else
