Definitely a good place for a date or to bring parents as it's very pricey and not an everyday indulgence. The happy hour crowd is distinctively upscale and the menu items cater to them perfectly. The atmosphere is just gorgeous and service pretty good. The food is very nice but only some dishes are real wowzers.
I have to say I just wan't really that
impressed.
I went to dinner with my husband last Thursday night. The restaraunt was packed, which is usually a good sign, but the food was bland and just so so. I ordered the double cut pork chop and my husband got the New york strip. Both were under cooked, under seasoned and buried with sauce that detracted from the overall presentation and flavor of the food. I hate going out to eat and feeling like I should have just stayed home because i can prepare a better tasting meal. The bill came out to over $120.00 for the two of us with drinks and dessert.
You don't always get what you pay for.
Overpriced steak-cicle. The service at my experience was good. Who ever buys the meat has a good eye as it was a quality cut but for $30 I expected more than three flakes of crab meat and medium rare typically involves warm in the middle. I'd expect more out of Applebee's kitchen staff.
Gone downhill. Jake's used to be a great place to go. I took a date there Saturday evening and although it wasn't crowded, the service was extremely slow. Once I finally got my food, the mashed potoatoes were wamish on the outside and ice cold in the inside. At somelace like Jakes, I at least expect my mashed potatoes to be made fresh and not yesterday's leftovers warmed back up...yuk. I could do that at home. My date's coleslaw was big chunks of cabbage with about 3 drops of dressing. It will be quite some time before I try it again. Portland has too many great places for dining to be wasting my time on poor service and thrown together fod.
good food/bad service. I haven't ben in Portland very long and I've been trying out recommendations from Portlanders. Jakes was on my list, so Friday night my 2 roomates and I decided to try it out. We were seated promptly (pretty early in the evening, so not busy yet). The hostess took our drink orders right away, but we sat around for a good 10 minutes before our waitress showed up at the table. We were starved and ordered right away, but sat there another 30 minutes before we could catch her to get more drinks...still waiting on food. The food finally came out and it was good, but she never came back to check on us even once. We finally flagged down another staff person to ask them for our check. Another 10 minutes passed and the original waitress finally reappeared with the check. We paid and left. The food was really good, but not good enough to put up with the long waits and being ignored. I'm not sure why so many people like this place.
Disappointed!!. Went to eat dinner last week around 7pm got a great table and was seated pretty promptly. My friend and I started with salads. My friends salad was just OK (mixed greens? mine was supposed to be a caesar that was only lettuce cut up NO DRESSING!! It took almost ten minutes to finally flag some service to fix this salad. Twenty minutes later, they fixed it by slapping a dollop of mayo on top.Everything else that night for food was not good. I have been a Jake's customer for 7 years and this was soooo uncalled for. I hope the management/owners read this review and make improvements.
crab cakes!. This is another one of those favorite restaurants you can count on for quick service, great food and a nap afterwards. I think I had better go there for lunch tomorrow, making me hungry!
Too much money for what you get. I've been to this restaurant 3 times over the past year. I don't think I'll be going back any time soon. I was there Saturday night. I could not believe how many dishes, at 6 pm, they were already out of. Talk about not being prepared. The waiter suggested the chicken Oscar - turned out it was over-cooked chicken breast with about 1 TBS of crab on top. The sauce was watery and cold. My husband had the mahi-mahi and he enjoyed it. We had the wild cherry pie for dessert and it was very good. The time before, we went with a large group for brunch. The service was good and there are many choices on the menu. The first time I went, I had the New York Steak. It was over-cooked (I asked for it medium rare) and cold. I sent it back and I swear, they just stuck it in a microwave! The portions, for the price are very small. I don't mind a smaller portion, but for the price....
Good Restaurant, Great Bar. We only drop in for their Happy Hour about once a month, and I grab a late lunch there 4-6 times a year (it's right on the streetcar line), so I'm not the best person to judge the full-blown "dining experience." The Happy Hours are great deals for the price, variety, and quality. The lunch plates cost a little more, but without the booze, it's still pretty affordable.
Very Disappointed. I would have much preferred to go to Henry's or Hudson's in Vancouver and could have gotten a bettter meal and service This was a retirement get togeter with my wife and boss and it was very disappointing. I got the encrusted halibut recommended by our arroganat waiter; my wife got the mahi-mahi (she was disappointed), and my manager got the 6 oz (all meals way overpriced for what you get) and he was kind to tell us that he enjoyed his meal. I won't be heatig up the telephone wires to make another reservation at Jake's.
