Portland >Bush Garden
This is the place for tradition!. A friend of mine always hangs out at Bush Garden which started me going. The service is always amazing and the food... well... I used to live in LA and I would hit some pretty killer sushi places. I always have leaned toward trying more traditional stuff. Since living in Portland I have tried several sushi/Japanese restaurants and have always been met with standard US fair. Bush Garden is by far the most traditional in every way. It is never crowded. The portions are always big and the sake selection is awesome. You must try Bush Garden.
Restraunt is Closed. as of last week or something. it's posted (on the front door) due to slow business from the construction going on all around it.
The food is disgusting------DONT EAT HERE. I've never been disappointed with a restaurant as I am today. I went there for lunch and had to wait 40 mins for my food to arrive. (I only get an hour for lunch) When my food finally arrived it was disgusting. I ordered beef teriyaki with rice and my partner order chicken teriyaki. The beef was covered in grease and the fat wasn?t trimmed off. The chicken was raw and the rice was dry and hard. I was upset and asked to speak to the manager. The manager approached us and I told her that it had been my first time coming and that I would never come back I told her and showed her what was wrong with the food. Instead of providing good customer service she told me " Oh well I?ve never had complaints maybe it?s just you." She was obviously rude and unprofessional. I asked for the check and paid $34.00 for a meal that I didn?t even eat. I would never recommend this place.
The room settings are very nice. The food is a bit overpriced. Especially for the quality you get.
The sushi was not good at all. I would have rather gone to Mio sushi or Saburo's ... maybe even sushihana for that quality of sushi.
Then when the server brought our food and set it on our table, I noticed that her nails were extremely dirty. There was dirt under her nails and it was really..not all that great to see my food set down on my table with dirty hands.
They were not busy when we went, but the service was slow.
I wouldn't recommend this place.
Maybe it used to be great but the quality has gone down..?
All I know is that from my experience, there are much better Japanese restaurants with better food, better service, and better everything .. for a low cost.
Great Experience. My Wife and I Loved this place, intimate, quiet, GREAT food and quite reasonable in price. I Highly Recommend THIS Restaurant.
Poor service. I've only been for happy hour and amazed that we don't see wait staff for 30 minutes at a time when there are only 3 tables of customers. They literally disappear from the room.
I used to go here for the happy hour menu a lot with friends. It was a regular thing. The service in the lounge has always been less than perfect. Still, the vibe was good and divey. Didn't mind spending $40 bucks on drinks to get $15 worth of food. About two years ago, service got worse. And then worse. Went there three times one week, and each visit, the service was incompetent. One of those days, we witnessed the server completely screw up two table's orders, as well as our own. This same day, they couldn't even figure out how to use the coffee machine. (<---no joke). Then they changed the happy hour menu. Can we get this? No, that's no longer on the happy hour menu. Can we get this? I'm sorry, we are not making that today (<---she said, as she pulled the food list away from us and crossed it out). Around this time, they stopped letting folks sit "upstairs" in the dining area.
That was almost a year ago. I went against better judgment recently and suggested that a friend and I meet there for a drink and some food. I cannot believe I ever recommended this place, and I am embarrassed that I made it such a regular place for years. It's so sad that it has become a complete s-hole.
The service is not only rude, but incompetent and uninformed. (I do refer to the lounge, not the restaurant--just for the record). The food was never spectacular, but now it is just plain bad. It was bad the last time I swore it off, and it is worse now. What a waste of a potentially cool space with what was once good food. I hope for the sake of downtown Portland that the owners sell this place soon. It couldn't get any worse.
worst service we've ever had in Portland. just say NO!!! It was our daughters 21st birthday (golden birthday) and we were expecting something fun. As it was, we didn't see a waitress for over 20 minutes after we were seated, it was another 30 minutes after we ordered before we were served our appitizers, and one of them didn't make it to the table until our dinner was served. The main meal was served in 10 minute increments. Half of us got our food, then 10 minutes later, the other half got their food and all of it was cold. We had asked for water numerous times before we got it, and didin't get the sauce for one of the dishes until we had been done eating for over 15 minutes. We, very politely, told the manager of the service, and she responded that she would "keep it in mind for the future"... I have to say that the waitress herself seemed to be very new, and was trying to keep it all together, so for that we give her credit for trying..... We certainly won't go back though..... it was very disappointing for the price we paid, the service and the fact that it was our daughters birthday.
We'll never host our annual party there again..
We held our annual party for 60 people in their banquet room, but never again. Most people couldn't get drinks until 45 minutes into our party. Appetizers came out an hour late. We were supposed to have four servers but we only had two for the first hour, and they were slow and clueless. Our main course was "shabu shabu" but the sauce was bland. Some tables didn't start eating until 2 HOURS LATER! What a waste of money. They charged us for a few guests who didn't show up even though the food came over an hour late.
The owners of this restaurant obviously don't care about retaining customers. It's a shame because the space is cool. If only the service and prices could be better. I'm waiting for the day when a good Japanese restaurant opens up downtown.
Did you know about the HAPPY HOUR ?? 5pm -7pm.
My husband and I stumbled across this restaurant last night ( a friday night!).
And we loved it!
We arrived there at 6pm and the hostess asked us if we wanted the sushi bar or the dining area or the happy hour. My husband said happy hour and we were taken to the bar/lounge. And there, we were SURPRISED when they presented us a menu with $1 appetizers ( with the purchase of an alcoholic beverage though!) But still it was such a great find and and they were so good, we had California roll, squid skewers, octopus dumplings etc.. a lot.
And for drinks, I had a peartini, and my husband ordered a beer plus a sake sampler ( with 3 different shots of sake ). All in all, our bill was just $25. wow
We were surprised that the place was pretty empty.
I would recommend this place, next time we'll try the sushi bar ;)
