What Our Expert Scouts Say

The Heathman Hotel
April 25, 2013

This historic hotel is so charming in so many ways. The service is Old School gracious, friendly and helpful from the minute you pull up to the curb. Rooms are comfortable, even if the bathrooms in some tend to be on the smaller side, keeping one foot in the past. Yet, the in-room amenities such as French press coffee, the free WiFi and much-appreciated slippers, are thoroughly modern. The location, just a couple of blocks from the heart of downtown, is terrific, too.

If you do stay, don't miss the early evening wine tasting in the hotel's super cool library. For more than 30 years, authors who stay here have made it a tradition to leave a signed book. It's possible to borrow books if you're a guest. Browsing the shelves is like devouring a delicious list of Who's Who in American literature and Pop Culture. Instead of watching TV at the end of the evening, my husband read Calvin Trillin's witty poems about the 2012 election from the book Dog Fight aloud. What a treat!

And speaking of treats, if you're a fan of afternoon tea, there's a lovely one served in the handsomely decorated lounge. (Pictured here.)

Appealing to seekers of old fashioned swank and 50 Shades of Grey fans alike, this downtown mainstay has a lovely tea court perfect for relaxing with a cuppa tea/something stronger after a long day of business meetings/tourist hotspot hopping.

THE LEFT HAND DOESN'T KNOW WHAT THE RIGHT IS DOING!. The Heathman! One of Portland's most upscale hotels! But some of the worst communication amongst staff I have ever seen. First they gave away our specifcally-reserved room minutes before we arrived! Even after checking in person twice that I was to get a room overlooking the Grand Floral Parade route. Being told that my reservation was mark so as to not have the room moved. We were upgraded to another room but our plans to watch the parade from the comfort and dryness of the hotel were ruined. In the evening when my partner fell in the hall and I called room service to bring some bandages for his arm, no one ever arrived. I had to call 3 times before someone brought something the next day. In the middle of our 2-night stay a guest services person walked into our room and told us it was marked to be vacated. At the end of our stay as we tried to check out I was charged for mini bar items we didn't use and then charged $600 for the room when we had a prepaid coupon we had purchased at a silent auction months before. Needless to say that they zeroed out all of our charges when I explained to them the horrific and continual issues we had at during our visit. Not to mention the $6.25 for a drink in the bar where the booze was non-existent. The Heathman was always very apologetic every time something was amiss. I just have never seen so many things go wrong and the no employee knew anything we had mentioned to several others before. Dustin should be fired, Amy commended for trying to correct his errors. They all should learn to discuss patrons desire and needs before leaving for the day. I will never stay at the Heathman again and will make sure my friends are aware of the extremely bad treatment we received!

Great Weekend at the Heathman.. We are from Seattle and came down during the big storm of '06 when all of the Eastside of Seattle had no power. We decided to avoid downtown Seattle and make a vacation out of it and goto Portland. We had an American Express Concierge recommend a hotel in the four star range. The Heathman was a great choice, right in the middle of everything. We got a double bed room and it was nice and roomy, since we could not get a room with a single king bed. We were not picky since we were already driving to Portland when we booked the stay. They invited our 40 -lb dog with no problem and everyone was friendly. There was a park behind the hotel that connected to the campus of Portland State, and we were three box from Saks and Nordy's. We stayed for 2 nights. We only ordered midnight snacks and breakfast for room service and it was decent. I usually have some problem sleeping on hotel beds, even nice hotels, but this one proved no problem. I think we had some kind of pillow top bed. They offered temperpedic beds also (we have one at home, and I would have preferred if I knew) The lobby looked very nice, but we could not enjoy it with the doggy. The Hilton was across the street, it looked nice but not as cozy...

Great experience all around. My wife and I stayed here on our wedding night and had no complaints. The check in/out process was very simple and the staff was super friendly and helpful. Our room was very nice and comfortable, one of the best rooms I have ever stayed in. The location is also supringsly easy to get to. I was a bit worried with all the traffic out front, but the staff does a great job of making everything as easy as possible for customers.

Make you feel like a King. All I can say is WOW!!! The hotel is absolutely gorgeous. The Heathman makes you feel like a King as soon as you walk in. The bed menu is great, it allows you to choose what kind of mattress you desire. Too cool!! The marble bar is nice, and serves great drinks. The restaraunt looks nice, we chose to have room service for a romantic evening. Their romantic package is worth the money. We also had a couples massage that was wonderful. I have never been so relaxed in my life! If you like historical hotels with great service this is the place for you. We had a Renaissance Room that was very comfortable. The 2 bathrooms made getting ready in the evening and morning easy for us. We will definitely be back!!!!

A few hiccups on a way to a great stay!. We went to stay at the Heathman hotel for our honeymoon and there were a few hiccups. We got there and our room was not ready so we went and walked downtown, which is always great, and got coffee at Starbucks. After getting up at 4:30 am to get my hair done, I needed the caffeine. We went back to the hotel and the room was still not ready so we went to the bar and enjoyed great cocktails. Finally our room was ready but unfortunately it was not the one we booked. Things finally got resolved and we had the wonderful Renaissance Room. I did go on the website to report the mishaps and then sent them a letter. Not only did we get a letter but we also got an e-mail expressing their apologies. We will definitely stay there again.

The Best in Portland. My daughter and I just returned from a two night stay at the Heathman. Our room was a nice size, considering we had two double beds, the restaurant was exceptional and the staff was extremely helpul. You are within walking distance of shopping, the art museum, and fine restaurants. The public transportion is very easy to use. Once we arrived we never got back into our car until we left!

Historic hotel provides comfort, elegance and all of the amenities to boot.. In Short
Landmark hotel's 150 stately rooms are decorated with Burmese teak paneling and Northwest art. Bathrobes, ironing boards, hair dryers, French-press coffee makers and high-speed Internet are in every room. There's also a free video library and a library for reading enthusiasts. Afternoon tea is served daily in the Heathman Tea Court, and the Lobby Lounge swings Tuesday through Saturday with jazz performers. The hotel's popular restaurant features Northwest cuisine with a French flair.

Amazing Botique Style Hotel. From start to finish everything was amazing. The service is as good if not better than any hotel I have ever stayed at. Rooms are smaller than I am used to but the amenities, lots of great movies, free peets coffee and tea, the wonderful turn down crew are well worth the lack of space. The concierge service is super knowledgable and each had special input to give to each and ever question we threw at them. Our entire trip went better because we ended here and it left such a lasting impression. To friends and people I meet on the street I ALWAYS recommend The Heathman. If you are looking for a great experience choose this hotel. The only negative I can think of is they are always full so it is hard to get a last min reservation. If you can get a parlor room, go for it

Great Service. The Heathman Hotel is one of the best hotels simply for their service. With a great restaurant, jazz in the tea court, and personal concierges - I couldnt ask for anything more.
