Editorial Review for Spa Sasse' & Urban Renewal Laser – by Nancy Levenson

In Short
The calming sounds of a flowing fountain greet patrons upon entry to Spa Sasse--a welcome contrast to the consistent wave of rushing people and cars just outside its storefront at SW Broadway and Alder. The salon is located below street level, so once inside, it's easy to forget that you're right downtown. Hair and body treatments are offered, including massage, reflexology, body treatments, tanning, facials and makeup application.

My daughter and I were very much looking forward to our facials. But Spa Sasse was disappointing from the moment we walked through the door. We were made to feel like we were interrupting the young man behind the counter. Then as we were led in to the back to fill out the paperwork, we were told we had to find our own pens because they were out. The waiting room consisted of two chairs in a very tight space. It was very definitely not clean or tidy or pleasant . There was none of the ambiance you expect in a day spa. The young woman who gave me the facial did not communicate to me whatsoever. At one point I asked if what she was using was chocolate, and she said,"It sure is!" and that was our total conversation. She left me alone, in the middle of the facial, for a very long period of time without explaining before or after where she was going. I've had facials before, and this lacked many elements of a typical facial experience even though this was one of their more expensive choices from the spa menu. Possibly I should have asked for someone with more experience. Rather than leaving there feeling relaxed and blissful, as has been my previous experiences elsewhere, I left feeling very taken advantage of.

Pros: Open on Monday.

I was given a gift certificate for a facial to this place and was really looking forward to it. The website had me looking forward to being pampered ala celebrity style (many celebrities were name-dropped on their website. Needless to say, i was disappointed. I arrived about 30 minutes early, was brought back to a cold, dark waiting room with cheap slipcovers falling off of the matching sofas, an amateur sponge-painting job on the walls and a cup of luke-warm inexpensive tea (in a paper cup... in my beloved green Portland!) By arriving early, I had hoped to relax in a robe and slippers but one was never offered to me and there was never anyone around for me to ask. About five minutes _after_ my appointment was supposed to start, I went to the front desk and asked if they knew the status of my appointment, she responded "oh, she should be done soon." Finally someone came and got me and took me into the treatment room. It was very cluttered looking and the choice of teal sponge-painted walls with matching cheap wall sconces didn't give me the feeling of "luxury." The facialist was good - she did a great job actually. But I must say that the ambiance leaves much to be desired and I'm certain that the celebrites mentioned on their website never returned.

Pros: Great facialist

Cons: Ambiance leaves MUCH to be desired
