It's only polite to frequent a city’s museum when you visit, and this one won’t disappoint--the seventh oldest museum in the USA, it's amassed an admirable collection and is known for its Native American exhibits. The treasure-filled gift shop alone is worth a lengthy persusal, even if you don’t tour the museum.
It is all about us - we're just sooooo important. What a waste of time. This museum isn't all that, yet we've supported it over the past few years since there is nothing much else in Portland. So when I emailed them to donate a $1500 piece of delicate, professional equipment they can use in their phography department -- no one on their exhalted staff could be bothered to return an email or make a call -- after all they are just soooo busy and important. And this isn't the first time. These people are imperious and unapologetic. They want your membership and your donations, but will never return your emails or calls. Why? Because they apparently just don't care about your opinions, your questions, or anything else except your money. What nonsense, especially in a recession. PAM can forget about a membership renewal next year or any other support.
China Design Now is a must see. I really enjoyed the China Design Now exhibit that is currently showing at the PAM. It was an educational experience and look at the past and future of graphic design, advertising, fashion, and culture.
The big art fish in Portland's small pond..
In Short
Founded in 1892, Portland Art Museum is the oldest museum of its kind in the region and has one of the most comprehensive collections on the West Coast. It houses art of the Pacific Rim, Europe and Asia. Outstanding traveling exhibitions add to the museum's wide-ranging representation of international, regional and local art. There's also an auditorium and an education center.
INTERESTING PLACE. The Portland Art Museum can have some interesting exhibits and has some intriguing works in their permenant art collection. It would be nice to go again and check out some new art, since I haven't been in awhile. I also am more knowledgeable about art, since I'm studying architecture at PSU.
HUZZAH!. I love the Portland Art Museum. I went there on a field trip once for my art class. It was great! I saw Monet's Waterlillies and a lot of other great art! :) Go there!
