Portland >Wong's Garden
I love it!.
I love Wong's Garden. I've been going there since I was 3 and the food and service is always exceptional. While it is a rather Americanized version of chinese food, I still love it. I like it more than traditional chinese food...maybe because it's the only chinese food I ever had growing up..who knows?
I have recently introduced several of my friends to the "Wong's experience" and now it is the only restaraunt they want to go to when they're over in my area. The people there are always friendly and the service is fast. The owner, Betty, is always so friendly and always gives us a laugh.
Another thing. Although this is a chinese restaraunt...the have the BEST hamburgers I have ever had. I love them.
You've got to be kidding me..
All these raving reviews, I'm guessing are from long time customers? Anyways, my partner and I have been going here for about 3 years (since we moved to the Woodstock area) just because it's close and cheap. We get the same thing every time: Pork fried rice and Pork foo young... why? Because everything else tastes better when made by Safeway right across the street. It's Americanized Chinese to the point that it's really just American food prepared by Chinese people. I also have to say that THIS RESTRAUNT IS NOT GAY FRIENDLY. Two other gay couples besides us have had horrible experiences when they brought their partners. On one occasion our server actually threw our teapot at us, which SPILLED! I've been a waitress for over 4 years and I can't even being to tell you the levels of apologies I would spout if I had spilled hot tea on a customer -- but not her! She actually got mad at us and left us with extra napkins to clean up what she very clearly deemed to be our fault (even though neither one of us even had the opportunity to TOUCH the tea before it rolled over!!). The food is OK, but nothing special (I?m ? Chinese, been to China and eaten food, so I think I?m a good labrat who?s been around the pen) it is very Americanized aka no salt+pepper prawns, no fun noodles with gravy, yeah.
I must tell you that this is not a gay-friendly establishment. Our other friends who have gone into Wong?s as a couple have told us they were treated disrespectfully (ie waitress don?t: fill water, ask how food was, fill tea, bring boxes, etc) while watching in plain view as the waitresses put on smiles and made conversation with the other customers with male+female pairings. I just don?t feel right supporting an openly homophobic restraint with terrible ?Chinese? food. If you want good Chinese, great service, and just plain the real deal go to Powell?s Seafood Restaurant on Powell?s and skip this dump.
Wong's Garden does have excellent food, however its in a dingy little building with limited space.
I believe that the other reviews are misleading- of course you get great service if you've been going there for years and years. My staff was friendly although unmotivated and slow. This is a nice cafe of a Chinese restaurant.
One time when I was there the cooks made themselves lunch. Fish. They put live fish on the back porch and let them die in the sun - literally - I asked the owner. The entire restaurant was filled with the smell of dead fish- we were among about 5 parties to run out of there.
Best Chinese in Portland!. The BEST Chinese ever!! I have been eating Wong's Garden for 13 years. The owner is always friendly, as is the staff. I LOVE the Sesame Chicken, Almond Chicken, Singapore Chow Mein and Wong's Garden Lo Mein. I highly recommended this to a friend and he isn't a big Chinese food fan, he is now hooked!! The portions are huge and make a great lunch for later. Woodstock's best kept secret is Wong's Garden!!!
User review by michelleprincesslee. I have been going here for years.. the service is great.. the people are very friendly.. they remember you... they know what you like.. they are always giving you free dishes.. it is a great place to go that is casual.. easy to get to and great food. There take out portions are just as big as the dine in portions.... now that I have kids they love going here as well... they can accomodate for big groups even though at first appearance it does not seem so.. they will make room for everyone and you will feel very welcome!
Most Excellent Service and Food. I have been going to Wongs Garden since I was 6 Years old. The owner whose name is betty has known me since. She always is very pleaseant, i always get a hug, and the fastest service i have ever recieved. The food is excellent and quite cheap as well. If the combos dont work for you, if you would like to subsitute that is no problem, they will do it for you. Great service, highly recommended.
I love Wong's Garden!. I started eating at Wong's Garden when I was 15, back in 1991. Thirteen years later, it is still my favorite place for Chinese food. Betty, the owner always greets me and asks about how I am doing and also about my mom. the food is always fresh and very flavorful. My favorite appetizer is the pot stickers. I will not order them anywhere else, they can't measure up. They come with this wonderful sauce that I love to add to the white rice as well. They are a must try! Portions are always enormous, so you'll leftovers for lunch the next day.The prices are also so reasonable that I always have change back from a twenty, even after leaving a generous tip for the curtious waitress. I 'm going again at the end of this month, can't wait!
Great service, fresh food!. I don't know where the other reviewer was eating at, but I know it wasn't the Wong's that I ate at last night. The green beans were fresh, but the Chow Fun, and Hot & Sour soup were as well. The service was excellent, the nice asian lady was courteous, quick, and always had a smile. I've had take out from Wong's too and it's just as good, especially if you are eating it in front of a t.v.!
