User Reviews for Good Taste Restaurant

5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended

I love Good Taste. A friend from Beijing first took me there in the mid 1990's. Not much has changed since then except that I used to be the only person in there who wasn't Chinese. Now there are almost as many Americans that eat there. I guess we're becoming a more adventurous bunch of eaters in Portland. Anyway, the Peking Duck (not always available, so call if you must have duck) is really excellent. The rest of the food is dang good too. There are ducks and other assorted roasted meats hanging in the window (a la vendors in Tianjin) that some people find distasteful. If you are among them, you might want to stick with P.F. Chang.

Like the other reviewers have said, you need not go further than this review if you are expecting a restaurant where black tie waiters serve you chilled glasses of water with lemon. However, if you want a 'hole in the wall,' AUTHENTIC, Chinese restaurant... well my friends, you have met your match. The prices here are dumbfounding. I'm a PSU student and I scurry down to Good Taste because the quality and value outweighs anything you can find S. of Burnside. Yes, as other reviewers have stated the service may not come with a daring grin or a "thank you!" exclaimed with a smile, but if you're looking for food with a smile go to Panda Express, the rest of us come here for the food, not the waitress' flair. By the way, she's a very nice woman, all the people here are great and once you've had the food you'll be stuck. I can only describe the 'secret ingredient' in their won ton mein as... cinnamon? I've attempted making it at home and that's as close as I can guess, no other won ton in Portland tastes as good. And at 5.50 a bowl, can you really complain with the portion?? Warning to those expecting Changs, or some alternate faux-Chinese establishment: I hope the hanging meats in the window scare you away. For those of us who actually are Asian, or for those fine people out there with a taste for REAL Chinese food, this is a great fast and cheap spot to get your proverbial grub on :) Like the others have stated, if you want faux-Chinese food, we urge you to go else where, this place is too great to get downgraded by a snotty crowd who cannot fully appreciate the efforts of traditional style cooking. Oh, and if you're looking for roast duck, BBQ pork, or other Chinese meat specialties; I challenge you to find a better restaurant that prepares their own. The hanging meat in the window should be a dead giveaway, this place is darn GOOD.

Pros: Cheap, authentic, "Good Taste"

Cons: No golden forks and platinum knifes on porcelain plates, sorry folks.
