Terrible Customer Service. On Thursday, September 1st, 2011 my Partner and I went to your establishment, Hobo
Had a great time!.
My wife and I have had a geat time every time we have been to Hobo's. We originally came for a valentine's day dinner. The filet was delicious, a better tasting cut of meat than Atwaters.
We have been back for drinks at the bar. The staff is very entertaining. The bar menu is quite good. Listed as a gay bar but it seemed pretty 50/50 to me.
Went with some friends last Friday night to Hobo's for the first time.
Fun place. Quite large. Brick walls. High ceilings.
Live piano music.
Pool tables in the back. Food is pretty standard, hotel-type fare. Worth going to for drinks before hitting the bars.
Would have gotten better service from a real hobo. This may be a politically incorrect title but entriely true. A group of us went here for Valentine's Day dinner. Needless to say there was very little about the dinner experience that inspired love. Our server was less than attentive in a half full resturaunt and we waited quite some time between drink orders and food ordering and the end of the meal for our bill. When the food finally came half the table was very diappointed. The halibut stank of fish smell, the medium steak was almost rare, and the vegetaables were raw. At least the wine glasses were almost full when brought to the table. By the time dinner was done we were ready to go but had to wait 15 min between having the table cleaned and having to ask our waiter for the check. Then to our surprise, and not a good one, we had been charged for the water. Now, this water was already on the table when we arrived and we were never told that there would be a charge for something none of us ordered and seemed standard, as it was there when we arrived! We had out of town guests with us and by the time we left we were so embarrased by the situation that we swore never to go back again. Slow, bad service and an obviously under experienced kitchen made this place not a fine dining experience but a big rip off of your hard earned money. The money I saved for this night was unwisely spent here. I should have ordered a pizza and rented a movie. We would have had a better time. Blech.
Worst Gay Restaurant In Portland. First they charge 17% gradutity on crapy service on 5 people even when the place is empty. Too many fo the waitstaff standing around the bar just laughting and talking when they should be doing their job. My meal took additional 30 mins after everyone was served. An yea the waiter never came back to the table so we could complain. The food is over priced for the greasy so I guess part of the 17% went to the grease company for getting rid of the fry grease. Needless to say I was embarrsed cause I brought out of town guess and they really were not impressed. Their were from San Francisco, CA. This was such a let down I will not be going back there again! I guess it's back to Starky's where there food is 5 times better. you guys sucked!
good drinks, convivial atmosphere, mediocre food. Ya, it's a civilized place to drink and shmooze in Old Town. Great space and decor. We've eaten there many times though, and it's really not worth it. Dining room is pretentious, so are the wait staff. The bar menu would appear to be decent, but the food quality is sub-par. Go for drinks, piano bar; it's a great place, just don't count on the food.
MEDIOCRE, DISAPPOINTING, UNINSPIRED.
I did not have a good eating experience at HOBO'S.
When a gay friend comes to town I hate being faced with the choice: Do you want Gay food or Good food? Why can't I have both in Portland?
Why doesn't Portland have at least one Gay-Owned/Operated Restaurant that offers exceptional food for a special dining experience? Hey, I'm not a connoisseur. But I do like to eat good food prepared with care and forethought. And many restaurants in Portland are truly superb.
HOBO'S, unfortunately, serves mediocre food.
I treated two friends to dinner on a Saturday night at 8PM in the upstairs dining room. We all had the same entree: Filet Mignon, medium-rare, served over whipped potatoes and vegetables (baby broccoli and asparagus).
The steaks were lukewarm and mine was medium well. The vegetables were way over-cooked and just dreadful. Obviously the steaks were left under the heating lamp too long and the vegetables left in warm water too long as we ate our appetizers: two tasty soups (chorizo and black bean) and one limp/shredded Caesar salad drenched in dressing.
I hate complaining about restaurants. But when I have a disappointing experience, I want to warn everyone. I go out of my way to support GLBT establishments. But I will not support mediocre restaurants.
It's just disconcerting that the gay-owned/operated restaurants in Portland can not compete with neighborhood venues that consistently offer excellent quality and service for a reasonable price.
Sad ... very sad.
Great food and Great Service. This place has great food... I don't really know what else to say. You can actually talk to people in there as opposed to not being able to listen to someone sitting across to you, as with most bars.
A gay and lesbian gentlemans bar.. One of my favorite places to relax and enjoy a great spanish coffee. The staff is always pleasant, although sometimes overworked on busy nights. The food is of fine quality, but perhaps a little overpriced, and generic. If you are making date plans, and your a food enthousiast, I would recommend going somewhere else to dine, and later visit Hoboss for a drink, or perhaps begin at Hobos for an appetizer. The cocktails are great. Definately lives up to the gay/lesbian scenes expectations of "the more booze the merrier." The environment is relatively quiet and personal. The gentle sounds of the live piano, coupled with the relaxed atmosphere, create a romantic setting that will put you and your date at ease. Some might say that the bars sounds a bit stuffy, with an older crowd. I frequent the establshment several times a month and am in my early twenties. The age range of customers ranges from the questionable twink, to the elderly. Overall I would highly recomend this restaurant to anyone, gay or straight, who intends on enjoying the company of a good friend or an interesting date.
amazing food for all walks of people. this place was amazing, had a large party there (12), seated promptly, drink never empty, food was incredible. It is like a meal mom would make with a twist!! AMAZING. Very comfortable for both straight and gay - not just a "gay and lesbian" place. Don't pigeon hole this place - it is awesome
