Great Lunch Buffet.
So since I moved to Portland I have only had Indian food once and it was kinda nasty, at this house turned restaurant that was later caugh on camera as having rats and roaches. GROSS!
So I had heard a lot of good things about Swagat so we decided to try it one day for lunch, we were definitely happy w/the selection and the food, as well as the flavors.
Now that I read the other reviews, I do remember the guy dumping water on our table every time he came by so they could improve on their service but for an easy lunch it was great. I would go back.
Decent food (but check your CC statements). We have eaten here twice...both times we were charged twice and had to have chargebacks issued. If you read Yelp reviews...you will see similiar stories
Why you shouldnt visit this place.
I am sharing my experience of the first and the last visit to this restaurant. We wanted to try some Indian "authentic" food so we were going through some books on Portland and Swagat was mentioned quite many times, so we decided to go there. As we entered things looked good, the first turnoff--the waiter poured water not on the glass but on the table. Its so irritating. Then this waitress comes in. She was behaving as if she was forced to work there. She was always in a hurry to throw us out of the restaurant. She bought food, and dropped the "sambhar" on the table --second turn off. And lastly before we finished, she asked us if we wanted a box. Couldnt she wait for us to ask? Now coming to food: This place serves NO authentic food. The dosa was sad and by the way when we asked the waitress about the Hyd. Biryani she said --it was not good, many customers complain, and apparently Swagat is run by AP folks. Good to know that right? The place is no good. The Bombay Chat on the streets servces better and fresh food.
This is my only suggestion: Do not go to this place. You would not leave with a wow factor.
As Good As it Gets In Portland. I'm a city where Indian is done well. Finding it in Portland is like a scavenger hunt. Don't waste time hunting, go to Swagat. The food is warm and tasty and probably the best you can find in Portland. It's not like New York City or San Fran Indian, but you'll walk away happy.
Slightly below average.
This is without doubt the best Indian restaurant in Portland, OR. Thus, on a national scale, it is a little below average, say 4/10 or so.
Portland has no Indian community. None, zero, nada. If you are visiting from outside our area, use your powers of observation. How many Indians did you see today?
The food is below average. If you absolutely must have Indian food while you're in Portland, well, this is as good as any.
I have some Tandoori mixed grill leftovers. If you want them, call quick, otherwise Merry, my aussie shepherd, is about to have a feast.
Horrible food. Great Location. Someone else please take over.
Being from India, and having eaten at ALL the Indian places in Portland my advice is to AVOID all the SWAGATs. If you have to eat at one, try the one in Hillsboro (orenco). The food is uniformly bad, the meats a little stale, and flavor uninspiring.
They may have been the oldest Indian place in Portland but need a change in cooks and management.
Our waiter was drinking whiskey while on the job and was rude.
Way disapointed!!!. Ok...being a huge Indian food fan...had to try out this spot in NW...so went in for the lunch buffet. Wow, just not good. I found the dining room to have that kind-of dirty filmy feel to it, the food was average at best, the middle aged woman that seated us behaved as if she would rather be ANYWHERE else but there. My friend suggested that we come back for dinner and try again, but truthfully I don't think I could get past the sticky dirty feeling...sorry.
good food, decent service. The restaurant was not overly busy and we were seated right away. This is only the second time I've had Indian food but I think I have found a new favorite cuisine. The chicken tikka masala was scrumptous and the lamb curry (red) was great. The restaurant looks really fancy but they were seating people dressed up as well as people in jeans and t-shirts. The service was slow but maybe she had a reason? If so, she didn't say anything. Altogether I think the experience was good and the food great; I'd go again.
Best Indian Lunch Buffet in Town. Portland has a number of good Indian restaurants but very few good Indian Lunch Buffets. For my money, and from my experience, Swagat is the best. It's only $8.95 for all-you-can-eat and they frequently replenish the day's dishes, so things are always fresh, hot and tasty. They could probably use more staff for the all-important water-glass-filling, but who couldn't these days?
Loved it. Awesome buffet! Fairly inexpensive, fresh, hot, and tasty...especially for a buffet. I had low expectations going in, but a friend suggested I go and it was great. There is this creamy curry with pieces of chicken that is the best.
