Never been happier with a cut....
If you're reading this, that may indicate that you're looking for a good cut. Keep reading, and try this place.
First, the parking--no mean feat in the Pearl. There's dedicated parking for their customers so you don't have to choose between getting a ticket, running out with a wet head to feed a meter or circling the block(s) while finding a spot closer than Lake O. I showed up early, found the parking (easy), so walked over to City Market as I had some time on my hands. Upon arriving at Blades, I was greeted with warmth. The place just feels good.
I had a ton of hair, far too much for my scrawny frame, but wasn't quite sure how to part with it (or part it, for that matter). Thick, curly, and down to the middle of my back. Gaylynn asked me a good number of questions to get to know more about the person underneath all that hair, and looked at my features to find out what would be the best way to make the most of the good ones while minimizing the rest. She was reluctant to cut it off on the first visit as that could be a shock, but I'm very happy she did. I've never had a better cut.
This was her last appointment of the day, but she wasn't tired or worn out. Instead, she was having a blast, and it showed in the cut she gave me. Now I'm looking forward to going back sooner rather than later.
There's no tipping--this is a good practice that encourages professionalism, and it makes sense. When your friends wonder who you are and where you got that cut, just tell them...and keep going back.
Good for many hair types, but not curly, long hair. Let me start of by saying that Gaylynn is an amazing colorist. My new stylist totally went with Gaylynn's color. Cutting curly hair is a very specialized field within the hair styling field. Unfortunately, nobody at the salon specialized in cutting curly, long hair. Most of their clientele seemed to have straight, short hair. After a lot of frustration at my frizz (even the anti-frizz from there wasn't helping), I finally had to switch salons and see someone who specializes in long, curly hair. I learned that my hair was being cut in a classic way, instead of in a way that most flattered my curls. The frizz was because of my curls not falling right. I also learned that I needed to be using a shaping gel, in addition to an anti-frizz gel. That being said, Gaylnn is a master colorist and all of their stylists do great work on most hair types. I would just suggest more training in curly hair, bringing on a stylist who specializes in curly hair, or maybe politely referring curly haired clients to stylists elsewhere.
go there. yikes! my haircut is cuter than i am!! got a great cut from andrea :) seriously, several people have already commented on what a cute cut for my face shape. i was really nervous going to a new place, and finally springing for a professional cut (i got a long bob). glad i found blades. it was warm and cozy in there on a rainy cold day; good energy. andrea patiently answered my many questions and really put me at ease. i like it that there is no tipping; seems psychologically cleaner that way, if that makes sense. and i like it that they only do hair. and that they make parking easy (they give you a pass for a closeby parking lot). and i got in quickly. thanks andrea!
Gina Saves the Day!. I called Blades after a completely nightmare color experience from another salon that shall remain nameless. I had never been there before. Not only were they able to get me in right away for a correction, but they didn't ask for my first born in order to fix my bright red hair! Gina was my colorist and she did an absolutely fantastic job. I have received nothing but compliments from my friends and co-workers! She was honest about what could be done to fix the mess and the result is beautiful. She was also extremely personable, so was everyone else come to think of it and they even have a shop dog! It seems like the salon staff has built friendships with their clients. It feels like you are walking into a friends house or something, everyone is chatting and laughing. Anyway, I am kind of glad my hair needed a color correction now because I may never have found Blades or Gina! Thanks nameless salon for ruining my hair so I could have Gina fix it!
Love Love Love Blades. When I moved from Boston I was desperate need of a place to get my hair cut. I searched all over and based on reviews Blades seemed like the place to go for what I wanted. From my first haircut ever to now, I've never had a better haircut in my life. I tend to change my hair a lot...sometimes short, sometimes long, sometimes keep my bangs long sometime chop them short...no matter how I decide what to do, my hair always looks amazing. Even when I was growing my hair from short to long, the growout process was incredibly painless, something I've never experienced. Over the fall I couldn't make it to Blades and thought Dosha would do in a pinch. I was sooo soooo wrong. Dosha butchered my hair. I went to David (my stylist at Blades) and he not only fixed my hair but once again made it incredible. I love Blades and will never leave them.
The BEST cut around!. Blades is a great place- a warm greeting when you arrive, very comfy place to be. I've had different stylists (now see Gina) and I've always gotten the best cut! They are fantastic, work with your hair type and preferences, and you can always get in. I'm leaving my stylist of 9 years to come here!
Want to do it their way. No hairdresser is perfect, I used to think David was as close as it got. But as talented as he is he has forgotten that what the client wants is what is important. He just wants to do the same haircut over and over. He doesn't listen anymore. I think he is tired of doing hair. I understand but it is disappointing.
Thank you for your comments. After 22 years I am still passionate about my craft and it
's very important to me to receive a "heads up" because I'm not always aware. Thank you again for for the feedback. I will take it to heart.

A+ Atmosphere & People! Couldn't Ask For More. I originally found this salon through a friend back in June when I needed a hair makeover. Lots of different colors that needed to be redone and after calling to make my appointment I saw Gina. From the moment you walk in, you'll feel right at home! Everyone is relaxed and the salon is not the least bit pretentious, and my color is amazing. Gina always listens to what I want and makes really awesome suggestions so that I end up with perfect hair every time. I highly recommend!!
Get your hair done @ Blades Hair Studio!!. I broke up with my hair designer a couple of weeks ago after 7 years. I was a little affraid to start anew. A friend of a friend recomended blades hair studio to me, and I am so happy I called for an appointment!! Janet who took my call was ever so nice and she was very concerned about how I would like my hair done. When I arrived, I was welcomed by Janet and the sweetest dog ever, Mable. I got my hair cut/color with Gina, who was constantly asking me if I was comfortable and offered me a coffee refill several times! She also made my hair look sooo Rad!! She asked me about my hair through out the cut which was very nice. Go Gina!! I had a Awesome experience at Blades Hair Studio and I will recomend it to everyone I know! This Salon is very friendly, layed back and lacking snobbery(which I perfer). Try them out. They Rock!
Forward-thinking salon with satisfaction guaranteed!.
Where does a person begin in describing why others should go out on a limb, believe a review and trust a stranger with a piece of themselves that reflects who they are...their hair?
Here is my feeble attempt~
First of all, my apologizes to Blades Hair Studio, I should have done this years ago. I must admit that I wasn't sure I wanted to advertise to the world wide web that I had finally found the last hairstylist to ever touch my hair. His skill goes beyond maintaining a highly successful business (in an industry where salons success rate is very minimual) and retaining 90% of his clients. From the thorough life-style interview to analyzing your facial structure, body shape and skin tone, he has already begun processing possibilities and options for the color and cut that would best suit you and your life.
His name is David. He has taken me on a journey through my hair. I have given him my trust and bar-none, the outcome is far better than I could have ever asked of him. I have been platinum blonde, purple, natural blonde with highlights, and deep red (I am sure I missed some). My cuts have always complimented my face whether it was a conservative or edgey.
I am not exagerating when I say, I receive at least one-two compliments on my hair every single day. Some days I actually chuckle because I receive so many. I am thankful I don't have to pay David a percentage on every comment.
Blades Hair Studio is known for their forward-thinking coloring and cutting techniques. Its kind of like when you purchase a shampoo/conditioner duo, they were created for each other. Its the same way with Blades~you really should make the investment in yourself and get both your hair cut and colored with them. The staff is so skilled that David will cut your hair to bring out the color Gaylynn painted on...or Gaylynn will color your hair specifically to show off David's precision cut.
Please know that if you desire to have results such as I have described, it did not happen because I told them what to do or how to cut/color my hair. Would you ever tell your doctor or lawyer how to do their job? We shut up and let them do their job, because they are the experts in their field. My results happened because of the interview process, David's developed and creative eye...and most of all, trust (mostly on my end).
One final item to mention regarding David's knowledge. He also developed his own line of haircare products. Since we invest our time and money in our hair by going this professional, our investment shouldn't stop there. It should continue in how we care for our hair. It will make their results last longer. I have tried EVERY product line out there and nothing works like Blades hair products do. Blades has their own website where you can read up on the salon and their products, order them online and have them shipped to you.
You can also find Blades Hair Studio on Facebook as well. A fact about Blades that sets them even further apart from other salons is that they have a No-tipping policy. They exist mostly on referrals from word of mouth, or reviews (like the one you are reading now).
I truly do hope this has helped you in a small way to make the decision to book an appointment with David and the rest of his staff.
