The WORST food and drinks I've had in 15 years!.
If you're considering going to the Mission for food or drinks, especially food, please read this.
My husband and I went to the Toga party tonight at the Mission and I have to say, this was one of the WORST dining experiences we've ever had. I ordered the Maria's Masterpiece because it is usually good at other locations. This was hands down the worst sandwich I've had in the past 15 years. It maybe had 2 ounces of turkey, one slice of ungrilled onion (menu says it has grilled onions, plural), one strip of overcooked bacon and no special sauce which totally makes this sandwich. Not to mention it was on a cold, over sized bun. When I asked the bartender for a side of special sauce, he brought me mayonnaise. Seriously? You list special sauce as an ingredient on your menu and you don't actually have it on hand? And when were you going to tell the customers? And all of that for $9.25...what a rip off!
Toward the end of the movie, I ordered a Long Island. I took one sip and thought, "Where's the alcohol?" I ended up chugging the drink down to see if maybe I was mistaken about the lack of alcohol...I wasn't. No taste of booze, no slight buzz, just a sickening taste of too much mix in my mouth. I'm not much for drinking, maybe have a drink or two every few weeks so I'm a light weight. But when a Long Island doesn't even give a light weight a buzz, something's not quite right around here.
I can honestly say I will never, ever go to the Mission again because of this experience. I don't know how a reputable company like McMenamins can care so little about the quality of their food and drink. Or maybe it's that the staff doesn't really give a darn. Whatever the reason, it was downright deplorable. I was going to refuse to give this place any stars but it won't let me post this review without checking at least one. But in all honesty, the Mission doesn't deserve even one star. In fact, if there were negative stars, I would check them all.
Pub-style theater shows second-run films in an old church.. Thrifty theater-goers head to this historic brick structure in the Northwest neighborhood to view second run flicks, sporting events and live music shows. The dimly lit space recalls the church it once was with balcony seating up top and an open downstairs room where clusters of wooden tables and chairs and worn theater seats form a horseshoe around the big screen. The sole snack bar sits at the entrance. Here, patrons place orders for pub grub and pick up pitchers of McMennamins’ ales and buttery popcorn to take back to their seats.
Eek!.
So here's the problem with the Mission. They put the screen up really high so you can see over the heads of the people sitting right in front of you. But that, coupled with the incredibly uncomfortable chairs makes for a rather distracting movie-watching experience.
The sound was very low and it was so bright in the theater it was hard to see the dark scenes in the movie.
Service is terrible. Mcmenamins has horrible service, HIRE BETTER STAFF!! People that know how to serve and know that they work for tips. We went and ordered food 10 minutes before the movie started an hour and a half later someone checked on us and asked if we had not received our food, and it still never came. After two hours, and the movie ended, we were then asked if we still wanted our food.
Mission Theatre. Great movies, excellent venue, HORRIBLE service. (typical McMenamins) We waited over 2 hours for our food. We checked with the waitstaff 2 times and each time they said they would check on our order and it never happened. Finally 10 minutes before the movie ended we asked for a refund. The server was less then friendly and said they would refund the money because that was "policy" but they offered nothing else.
Mission Theater is great. Go here to escape the ridiculous prices and all the ads at Regal. I highly recommend the pizza bread.
I love it McMenimen's theaters!. A movie theater that is more relaxed. You can drink, eat, and be happy while you see a flick.
Do not go early!. Do not go early whatever you do! In order to get a beer or something to eat before the movie you must pay for the movie that is still playing, which is almost over anyway, plus the movie you had desired to go see in the first place because the very rude cashier will not let you wait inside. Then when the previous movie final was let out waiting in line was very disorganized..no one knew where to form a line and the cashier didn't even show up to let us in for about a half hour. Also do not sit downstairs you end up getting a kink in your neck and everyone downstairs talks throughout the whole movie. Needless to say we had a long testing-our-patience kinda night. At least the beer and dungeon burger was delicious. I would highly recommend the bagdad theater over mission!!!
Why only in Portland?. This is one of the greatest concepts in modern cinema and I'm surpise it hasn't become more popular in other cities. Be sure to get there early to get a good seat. I suggest the couches in the back. The food and beer is standard McMenamins fare, but it's a cheap movie and a fun night.
Fabulous!. Cheap movies, great pizza and great beer--what more could you want in a theater?
