What Our Expert Scouts Say

Elephants Delicatessen

It's not a deli, it's a culinary emporium! Dine in, luxurious retail housewares and foods to go. Great place to find gifts for your foodie friends, or yourself!

I am a big fan of their GIANT chocolate chip cookies (sometimes they have them with M&M's) but you can't go wrong here no matter what delicious treat tickles your fancy.

Customer service is terrible. the place is very unfriendly, not at all like it use to be in the uptown area. The food has changed also, not fresh and when you ask for something to be made fresh athey get upset.

I'd rather starve. Don't believe the hype about this place. Horrible management, & most of the staff I experienced were more interested in navel-gazing than working. The wine selection was virtually nonexistent, & of mediocre quality. The cheese department wasn't much better. Poorly maintained products, unimaginatively displayed, cookie-cutter selection, & the young woman working there never addressed me once (nor the nice man next to me who rolled his eyes). She avoided eye contact as much as possible. With one exception, the place was a severe disappointment. The exception was one young woman tossing pizza dough or something, who was as sunny as can be. Everyone else was a complete tosser, especially the know-it-all know-nothing manager. This review is being written by a food & wine professional with many years of high-end experience.

We love this place!!. My family eats here at least once a week! The sandwiches are to die for, expecially the jamone al fromage. The only down side we can find is that a "few" of the help are shall we say a little pretentious. Other than that, if you want a great lunch or a great pick up and go meal, this is your place. And don't forget to save room for dessert!

Yes it is better then McDonalds. Overpriced and I agree with the review below the quality has gone way down hill. Everything seems to be focused on profit and ease of service not quality anymore at Elephants

Neighborhood classic favorite. My husband and I are West hills regulars. We love Elephants! I love the consistent dedication to good food and good favorites. I love that it carefully took over a great space vacated by Il Fornio.

Let's not forget that it is a deli and not a restuarant.... elephants gives every normal holdiay a reason to stay home, find a great picnic spot or a romantic view AND have great food without the hassle, tip or pretense. How could this be missed by some critics? Every birthday or valendtines day is a reason to shop at Elephants and set the mood vs. spending a lot of money for long waits at great resturants.

It is also by the way the best of fast (but good )food restaurants...I frequently have lunch with my 4 1/2 year old for less money, with better food, in a great environment than McDonalds.

Sometimes newer isn't always better.. Let's face it Elephants doesn't seem to have the quality once given in not only service but also the food. The new place yes has plenty more seating but it doesn't give you that warm fuzzy feeling we us to get when we went to the uptown shopping center. Parking is better yet it was almost like when you got a spot at the old space you felt you were really going to the IN place to be, now its the place to pay for over priced food. I also noticed so many different faces behind the counters, its not like it use to be.

BEST SOUP. A great spot to pick up an instant picnic or just cozy up at a table with cup of soup and crusty bread. The new location puts you further from other shops, but has the bonus of parking and more counter space which equates to more food options.

Today's Elephant's Observation.... I work in NW and regularly visit Elephant's 2-5 times a month for sandwiches and salads.

On my visit today, I realized that every employee I've dealt with at Elephants is unfriendly. The cashier doesn't smile when I approach and stuffs my items into the paper bag like she hates to be bothered with it. The sandwich guys are always irritated when I want a fresh sandwich made, instead of one that's been sitting in the cold case for hours.

The only reason I still shop there is because of the convenience. It's really a shame that someone hasn't opened a similar place, but with nicer staff.

HOLE-Y CHEESE!!. Elephants new space is incredible! For those of you that don't know, they took over the space what was formerly the restaurant Il Fornaio-one of the most beautiful builings around. They have a full bar with superb cocktails made by Lucy Brennan (Mint/820) just for Elephants....and the cheese, oh my god--this is got to be the best place in Portland by far to get your gourmet dairy fix.

A bakery and gourmet store for well-heeled neighborhood residents and shoppers in this trendy district.. In Short
It's a feast for the senses, offering all the sights and smells that come with freshly made soups, sauces, sandwiches, pastas, hors d'oeuvres, entrees and salads. The bakery whips up bread, tarts, cakes, pies, cookies, pastries and more. There's also an olive bar, and an espresso and tea bar. In addition, the store carries cookbooks, wine, cheese and a variety of gifts for the gourmet.
