Pizza by the slice. No delivery, credit cards, or ranch dressing! Noted on their menu. The sauce, the crust and the spunk just like NY! Yum!

I love this place. It is nestled right on 23rd (cash only) and they normally have about 3-4 pizza choices. The pizza is perfect.
My favoritest favorite ever :) total NYC pizza ? (where my fam is from) anyone with a bad review on here SURELY NEVER ACTUALLY SET FOOT IN THIS PLACE - my family loves this place and for as often as we go we have seen slow times and busy times and never ever been given issue whether we tipped or not - and whether it was busy or not these guys were always great - never been rude ever. I agree with one review I read that they sound like competition - this place has always been fabulous! :) glad the jackasses 'won't be back' as their bs definitely isn't welcome!
I've been going to Escape From New York
since I was a kid. Just moved to Portland (just south of Burnside around 23rd) and now frequent the place, since it's right down the street from me.
There seem to be a series of really incredibly bad reviews on here. And they all seem pretty similar. Way too long (and all similar length), similar language, similar unrealistic horror-stories. And, they SOMEHOW seem to all have been written within two weeks of each other over a period of a couple months. HMMMM....
I can't help but think it's a competitor or something like that, because I've NEVER seen anything REMOTELY close to what these people describe. Health code violations? A guy demanding to see some girl's ID on her birthday arbitrarily?
That's not what this place is about. It has great food and perfectly adequate service. It's never been unpleasant when I've gone, and I'd imagine I'd have seen something by now if there really were atrocities like this happening in this place. I go there at least once a week, often several times.
tl;dr -- bad reviews look fake, this place has great food, cool people, mellow vibe.
Say what you will, it's still the best thin, greasy, fold-in-half slice you're going to find in this town. They really ought to be recycling or composting all those plates by now though.
I've been going to Escape since I was 12 and now I am taking my kids there. It's a Friday night family tradition...we love it!
Worst service EVER!. I see my friend has already posted, but I thought I'd chime in as well. I was out with my friend for her birthday and this was the place she chose. The guy who helped us was a complete as*hole. Maybe he thought he was being funny, but if that's his idea of customer service....I'll never go back. If it would have been my birthday, I would have told him his an as*hole and walked out. I asked if I could get an extra topping and was told "no". Really? You don't add toppings to pizza? I'm sorry you didn't have the time to help me. I don't have a lot of time in my day, but I thought for sure I could take the time to not help you as well.
What happened to good ol' Escape from NY Pizza?. As a Portland native, when it came time to decide where to go for my birthday dinner the other day, of all the restaurants in Portland I chose Escape from NY Pizza. I went with the memory of delicious pizza and chill pizza dudes chattin' it up and enjoying life. Instead, much to my sadness and surprise, I was met with some of the worst customer service I have ever received at any restaurant anywhere. I asked if I could choose my slice, and the counter guy said no because it was too busy (there was only one guy waiting behind us). My friend chimed in that it was my birthday and to cut some slack. Response: "rules are rules," and he even had me show my ID to prove it actually was my birthday. Proof didn't change a darn thing tho. So in the end he had time to check my ID but not give me the extra second to point at a slice, give me sh*t later for only getting water when I declined any purchased beverage, and was genuinely a dick. You can't rely on quality of pizza alone; customers will drop like flies when you're the type of business that can't even give a smile to someone on their birthday.
Great pizza rude service.
I tell my girlfriend we gotta go down to NW Portland thinking she might appreciate the ambience. Its the summer and all. I tell her about this great pizza place she's gotta try. Well let me just say that you better load up the tip jar first thing regardless or suffer. So the guy behind the counter is just kinda glaring at me
for not kicking down a big tip for bad service. The pizza was in the glass case, he put it on a paper plate and he handed it to us. Go to back to school and learn some job skills. You will notice the first thing you come to is the tip jar. This should tell you somethng. So if you go there slap the tips in fast in full view of the help and expect to be treated like crap anyway. The drunk punks on the sidewalk blew the whole ambience thing out of the water and the pizza joint was seen for what it really was. A dive that is. Put a little sugar in the dough and they will line up regardless.
Heath Code Violators, Terrible Service.
First, the service is ridiculously bad. Every time I went to this place (which wasn't very many because of these reasons), I would walk in and stand by the counter waiting for 5 minutes waiting for someone to acknowledge I was even there - with NOBODY else in line, only 2-4 people eating in the lobby, and 2 so-called employees chatting it up behind the counter 3 feet away. They force you to be the a-hole and interrupt their conversation to ask them to do their job.
The real reason for my review is why I will never step foot in this place again. I ordered a pizza by phone and was told to pick it up in about 20 min. So I get there about 25-min later and of course, waited at the counter for several minutes for somebody to ask me if I needed help. When I told them I was there for a pickup order, they hadn't even made it yet and I had to tell them a second time what I wanted because they lost the ticket. So again I waited in the lobby while they made my pizza and several others. As my pizza finished baking, I saw the employee take it from the oven and put it in a box, AND GIVE IT TO ANOTHER CUSTOMER WHO CAME IN AFTER ME. I was baffled and didn't say anything at first because a) maybe we ordered the same pizza, b) maybe I mistook someone's pizza for mine as they went into the oven - either way, I gave them the benefit of the doubt (they're getting paid to do their job, right?). I waited about another 10 minutes and then watched as they placed another pizza in a box, entirely different from anything I ordered, and then handed it to me. I opened the box and told them that this is not what I ordered. They reluctantly checked my new ticket and found that it was NOT my pizza. They then talked amongst themselves for a minute when one of them ran to the phone and made a call. It turns out, they had indeed given my pizza to the other customer (who had arrived early anyways) and I had received hers.
Now, it's already an extremely frustrating situation and a complete waste of time, but here is where it just gets gross. They had called the other customer to let her know she had the wrong pizza (which she had already discovered and was on her way back) and when she arrived, they gave her the pizza they had tried to give to me, and then GAVE ME THE PIZZA SHE HAD ALREADY TAKEN HOME!! They basically said "Here ya go" with no apologies or signs of realizations as to what they just did and what kind of health codes they violated. I took the pizza and threw it in the nearest trash outside and went home. I was absolutely speechless.
This place is disgusting in every way. The employees are trashy and I get better service at the DMV. I will be posting this same review on every ratings site I can find and will be contacting the Health Department regarding the issue.
