The Scene
Don't let the plastic mermaids and bare-bones interior fool you--this place is authentic through and through. Vegetarians beware: This is a meat-lover's den and the menu of carne asada, marinated pork, tongue and chorizo sausage reflects it.
The Food
This family-run establishment brings its recipes to life with spice and flavor, making return customers out of just about everyone. Tacos served on warm corn tortillas and topped with cilantro and minced onions, cost less than $2, and hefty burritos ring in around $3. There is always a bowl of fresh limes for garnish, along with hot red and green salsas. For a more exotic treat, try the shrimp cocktail, served in a tall glass with spicy tomato salsa, or the Seven Seas soup, bursting with fresh shellfish of the day. To cool off your mouth, try the horchata, a sweet concoction made with milk, rice, brown sugar and cinnamon.

This is/was the best local mexican spot in NE Portland until today. I ordered fish tacos and a order of chips with pico de gallo. When I pulled the chips with pico out of the bag they were wrapped in, an insect fell out of the bag and landed on my counter still alive. I have eaten there for years, but unfortunatly will never go back.

I ate at La Sirenita a few months ago upon a friend's recommendation, and abso-frickin-lutely LOVED it! It's a small hole-in-the-wall type of joint, but very close to the true essence of what a genuine taqueria should be. Go to Mexico and you will find many places like La Sirenita that offer similar, equally tasty fare. If you're looking for Latin cuisine that is big on ambience, don't go to La Sirenita - go to Andina's in the Pearl for some Peruvian (and pray that you get good service there). La Sirenita offers a wonderful array of delectable, authentic Mexican foods that will more than satisfy any stomach. In fact, it is soooo good - it may even offend the palatial "sensibilities" of some of Portland's bountiful WASP crowd. And THAT, my friends, is how I know that this taqueria ROCKS! :-)
