Portland >Akasu Hair Studio & Spa
For hair and face care, Akasu is the best in Portland.. Almost six years ago I made an appointment for a haircut here with Tyra and have never looked back, especially after the mediocre ones I was getting with pretentious people. It is a calm atmosphere, with unique products, the Yonka skincare line has changed the quality of my skin for the better, and Sarah, one of the estheticians there, really knows the products and doesn't oversell them to you. But, they are expensive!
A great salon/spa that is minutes from my house!. Akasu is an awesome place to come for all of your male grooming needs. Whether it is a haircut or some of the other spa offerings, the quality is always top notch and you come out looking great. Plus, shopping for gifts for special occasions is easy as my wife always loves to receive gift certificates from Akasu for the amazing massages!
Good fer dudes.
Like most men, I've struggled over the years to find a good place for haircuts. Once you're out of your early 20's, spending $15 for a cut just doesn't cut the mustard anymore. But neither do I feel the need to spend $50 and up. I mean, I am a dude after all.
Akasu is the perfect mix. You don't feel like a total metrosexual just walking into the place. But neither do you feel like you're going to come away looking like you just went to Supercuts (no offense to anyone who patronizes Supercuts). The environment is very friendly and relaxed, and just between you and me, the ladies who work there are easy on the eyes, which doesn't suck is all I'm saying.
As an added bonus, my wife has gotten me massage gift certificates a few times for Xmas & birthdays, and they're always killer. She also keeps trying to tell me I should try one of their facials, but screw that. I am a dude, after all. But if you're into that, she says they're awesome. So, there you go.
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent.
I've been getting my hair cut at Akasu for several years and have always come away with the perfect cut. Jennifer is my stylist, but even when she's out on vacation and someone else has to cover, the cut is always perfect.
And Akasu is a good spot for guys -- not all "salons" can say that. You feel like you're being pampered, but it's not over-the-top frilly and girly.
Massages here are also outstanding. Definitely worth getting one as a little Christmas present to yourself...
Wowza. A Gem of a Salon/Spa..
It makes sense... I would want to work there too! Let me explain.
You do not have to go to a ritzy spa or salon to receive top notch services. Akasu is located minutes away from downtown in a renovated Victorian house. This alone makes me happy and sets the tone for the business: They want you to feel relaxed and tranquil, in a very tangible unpretentious manner. They offer a variety of haircare lines, with Yonka as their main skincare line (big plus!), as well as quality ancillaries. They offer a wide variety of services for very reasonable prices.
But the best part? The staff. It seems they have stolen the best hairstylists and colorists, the best estheticians, and the best LMTs from the greater Northwest and employed them at Akasu. But it makes sense...I would want to work there too! If I were a fab esthetician, I would not be comfortable in a ritzy-ditzy spa. I would be comfortable at a place that felt like home (but better).
So yes, this is a long review. But I hope I got my point across. Do not be put off by the reasonable prices, this place is world-class in the heart of Portland. If you want to be comfortable and really want to look your best, come to Akasu.
P.S.: Go see Ally Guest for facials/treatments/waxing. Go to Jen for hair.
Walked in a few weeks ago to an inspired Tyra: "Ready to try something new?"
So yet again, careful, meticulous cut and new color have brought at least five people to remark on how great my hair is. I've been going regularly for almost two years and I continue to be super pleased. If you want someone you can trust with your appearance, check out this studio!!
First visit a success!. After being disappointed after getting a cut at 200 Salon (highly recommended from Portland Monthly), I had to wait a few months to get my hair long enough for another proper cut. I was also on the market for a new stylist since we just moved to the area; luckily, my search is now over! I was a little apprehensive over the phone when I scheduled my appointment and I expressed this to the receptionist; however they assured me that Tyra (the owner?) would take great care of me and that she did. Although, they did forget to call me the day prior to confirm my appointment, they called me back the day of to confirm it. Tyra listened very well to what I was looking for and also made her own suggestions and gave her input as to what would work and what wouldn't. It was helpful for her to express how my hair might differ from the look I was going for because of it's current state. She made me very comfortable and as a result, I have a haircut I love. My hair looks wonderfully healthy and she showed me how to style it appropriately (just how a stylist should show clients how to keep up the look versus just expecting them to manage own their own). They also gave me a tour of the upstairs spa that I look forward to visiting.
I had to see it, to believe it!.
My best friend has been tempting me for 2 years with tales of her visits to Akasu. I'm ashamed to say it took me that long to finally make an appointment and go. What was I waiting for?! I watched every woman in our circle of friends make her way (in her own time) to visit this little jewel of a spa/salon in N. Portland. Each one coming away with rave reviews. In fact, I can't recall hearing about a single negative experience from ANY of them. Again... WHAT TOOK ME SO LONG??
I'm a bit of a tomboy, I guess, so "girlie" endulgences don't generally take up much of my time. But seriously? There's nothing at all pretentious, or otherwise uncomfortable, AT ALL about this place. Everyone is so incredibly friendly and down-to-earth, They are the absolute perfect reflection of our beautiful, laid-back, Pacific Northwest. I felt like I was chilling at a close friends pad while simultaneously being spoiled to death. Talk about the best of everything!
So far I have only had a facial and some waxing but, let me tell you! I intend to try it all, before I am done. Or rather, before I start from the beginning again. My best bud has been seeing Treysi for some time now. In fact, I think she has been introduced to everything Treysi does. Apparently, she's multi-talented and does just about everything except hair and massage. So, of course, that's who I booked my first appointment with. And, as expected, it was amazing! So, long story short (well, shorter), I WILL be back. And, if you have a secret desire to reward yourself for something... or simply, want to hang out with a great group of chicks. This place is for you. Trust me, if I can feel at home... ANYBODY can be as comfortable, if not more.
Try Akasu, seriously! You won't regret it.
Best Pedicure!!!. My friend and I had been searching for "our Spot" for months when we found Akasu and decided to give them a try!! Well we had The Best pedicure experience ever!! Everyone was super nice and professional!! The salon itself has a very welcoming and relaxing feel, its beautiful! Everything is super clean. you don't have to worry about the foot bath harboring major germs in any jets because they use portable tubs and put stones in the bottom for a nice soothing foot massage. The polish used is all natural, which is something you don't find everywhere! Heather and Treysi were so much fun and did a wonderful job on the pedicure, as well as making sure we were comfortable! They offer a great selection of beverages, which adds a nice home touch! I highly recommend receiving services from either of them! Needless to say we found "our spot" and can't wait to try some of the other services offered!
Best brow shape.
I followed Josh Lange to Akasu because he is the absolute best for brow shaping. I have always had a problem with my brows because they aren't even and are very bushy. Over the years I've gone to dozens of different folks with mixed results. After the first time Josh shaped my brows I knew my days of wandering were over. I've recommended him to a few friends who have also had great results.
I took advantage of a special offer he was having on facials and now I'm hooked. The facial was the perfect mix of relaxing spa experience and nourishment my ultra-dry skin was craving. His knowledge of skincare is amazing. He has a great, low-pressure way of recommending products that I really appreciate.
This was my first time to Akasu, but I really liked the vibe and the staff were all very friendly (not always the case in a spa). I will be trying other services and think that I may have found my new spa!
