The Scene
This huge Queen Anne home stands out, even in the upscale historical Irvington neighborhood. It was built in 1906 and the decor remains true to the era. The moment you walk through the door, you feel as though you've entered a different world. High tea, a roaring fire and fresh-baked cookies await.
The Details
The building is architecturally significant, with its unique blend of Victorian elements. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places and takes that honor very seriously. The place is decorated with period carpets and antiques, and the rooms are beautiful as well as comfortable. Most offer their own baths. Outside, the English-style gardens feature fountains, bird baths, statuary and a gazebo.

I took my wife here for our anniversary and was very happy. Our room was great and the staff was so nice, the room was so comfortable. My wife was very happy and that is what made the most of our weekend! I will go back again.

On our 31st anniversary weekend first-time stay, we felt the house was over-decorated to the point of being cluttered. We prefer decor that is simple and elegant, but found the whole house just over-done. Like a well-prepared meal, we feel you normally want to limit the number of spices so as to complement the main dish, not confuse the senses... But that was a minor disappointment. One of the owners barged into our room just after 9 am, surprising my wife, who was undressed after her shower. Although he immediately came down and apologized profusely to me downstairs, we found it odd that the owner would find it appropriate to come into our room when he supposed we had gone down to breakfast. My wife said he made only the most rudimentary knock before opening the door and surprising her. She felt her privacy violated. We had not checked out. Our sense was the room was "ours" and we can't think of a legitimate reason for anyone, especially an owner, to compromise that trust and privacy. At 9 am on the morning of departure, we certainly didn't need our sheets turned down. The intrusive nature of this encounter we found simply unprofessional at best, weird at worst. We contrast this experience to staying in November at the Inn of the White Salmon in White Salmon WA, where the facility is an older restored hotel furnished with antiques. We took employees and spouses there for a weekend retreat, and found it wonderful in all respects. The furrnishings were appropriate and comfortable. The owner didn't barge into our room, either.

We got there a bit early in the day due to the Amtrak schedule (MN->OR). They were hospitable and accomodating and gave us our room even though checkin wasn't for hours. We were treated like family, shown where the snacks are and were invited to relax any where in the house. Their restraunt recommendations for dinner were great. The room was clean, comfortable and lovely. And the breakfasts were fabulous. ! We felt spoiled and pampered on our anniversary trip.
