In Short – Founder Joseph Coulombe started this L.A.-based convenience chain 34 years ago. Today, you can get exotic, prepackaged frozen foods, fresh salsas, huge portobello mushrooms, baby artichokes and heirloom tomatoes fresher--and cheaper--than at most supermarkets. Inexpensive meat, fish, coffees and teas, dozens of cheeses, grains and pastas cram the shelves. The frozen section features tasty treats, including barbecue chicken pizzas, mushroom risotto and salmon patties. Beer, wine and liquor sections are stocked with very affordable labels.

Terrific customer care

I've been shopping at TJs for years. They're great for all the reasons previously listed. I had to publically acknowledge their customer service after my shopping experience yesterday. I was with my energetic 3 year old who was trying to climb into the shopping cart while I was looking away for a moment. Suddenly, I heard a crash and cry and saw my child on the ground. Luckily he wasn't hurt, just startled from the fall. Three different employees came rushing over to our aid. Before I could notice, one had picked up the cart that had fallen and placed my items back in. Another came running over with a baloon to calm my child and and another asked if I needed more help. The staff was so very mommy and kid friendly, attentive and helpful. Come to think of it, every time I shop there, the staff is friendly...and happy. Why are they so happy?

What a cool store!

Very different approach to groceries. You won't find everything here and they don't want it that way. Great frozen foods, cheeses, canned goods, snacks, and wines. Fresh meats and produce are not a strong point but not bad. Things from all over the world and they'll let you taste before you buy. Great sample-folk! They'll tell you whether something is worth buying or not. Also great cooking tips. Go Joe!!!!!
