What Our Expert Scouts Say

Laurelhurst Market

Quite possibly the best steakhouse in the city, it features a butcher shop offering meats smoked, roasted, stuffed, cured & corned on the premises. Dine on the patio when the weather’s nice.

Keep Laurelhurst in mind for your last minute meat purchases as late as 10 p.m. On Tuesdays they start frying up their famous fried chicken at 11 a.m. that's only available until they sell out.

Tender steak cooked to order and served on top a bed of sauteed greens tossed in Ancho Chili Romesco & Oregon Salt. House made ricotta served warm with some of the tastiest olive oil you'll savor every bite. Don't ever feel awkward about ordering a burger here - it is to die for!

Perfect for Paleos due to the a la carte steak menu, salad offerings, and veggie sides to make your own primal meal. They've also got a butcher counter so you can stock up on grass fed meats for home cookin.

Rumps, roasts 'n racks--this protein-rich annex of popular Laurelhurst Market restaurant keeps the east side in quality meats every single day of the week, but they also serve up solid sandwiches made with housemade smoked ham, pastrami, roast turkey and corned beef. Plus, if you're fresh out of lard, you can pick some up with your lunch.

Can't wait to go back... 6 of us walked over to have dinner (love that it's in our neighborhood) last month. We had a reservation and were seated promptly even tho the restaurant and bar were full and people waiting at the door. Our server was attentive and helpful, even as busy as it was. I ordered a gin and tonic and the server said they make their own tonic water - it had the perfect balance of bitter and sweet. We ordered scotch eggs, sweetbreads, roasted marrow bones for starters and practically licked the plates clean. The piedmontese hanger steak was perfectly prepared, and melted in your mouth. The smoked brisket was so full of flavor and fall-apart tender - and a huge portion! The mac and cheese was tasty, but I prefer it creamier with more sauce. I didn't taste it, but the salmon was pronounced a winner, too. I was too full for dessert, but apparently it was good, too - everyone else polished it off....

Also, their meat counter at the entrance has a great selection of their in-house prepared sausages, pates, etc. Everything I bought out of the case soon after they opened was fabulous. Some of the best frankfurters I've ever tasted, too.

Citysearch Editorial Review. Any doubt that this East Burn restaurant is a meat-driven locale vanishes when you walk through the door and immediately face a glass-fronted butcher case filled with house-cured bacon, house-smoked kielbasa and rabbit pate. To the left of this classy butcher shop, the brick red walled dining room fills with middle-aged steakhouse followers looking to loosen their ties over a grilled ribeye and bottle of wine. Hipsters sporting thrift store tees and skinny jeans join in, devouring Belgian-style mussels frites and steaks topped with chimichurri or fennel tapenade. This modern steakhouse cuisine steps outside the box without breaking the budget.

Bad service and preferential service. As a self proclaimed foody I wanted to check out one of Portland's newest attractions but what a disappointment. A waiting time of one hour lasted almost two hours which allowed for ample demonstration of preferential treatment to regulars which were seated immediately, a waitress rushing away in mid sentence - a conversation with one of the owners didn't help either according to him she is his best server - over-salted side dishes, french fries arriving at the end of the dinner. Laurelhurst Market might be the happening place but you can get better service in many other of Portland's restaurant.

Great Food, good service. the mussels were succulant and plenty. I prefer the frites on the side, since it is ackward to have to dig through the heap of frites to get to the mussels.

The Steak Tartar was ecellent, the taste of the meat was not overpowered by seasoning.

We had hoped that the Steak Frites would be the bavette cut, but my partner was well satisfied with the cut du jour, top sirloin.

Service was attentive and non intrusive.

Maybe this was not intentional, but I really liked that the water was not ice cold but had a pleasant room temperature.

Simply mouthwatering..... This is a fabulous replacement of a longtime Burnside quickymart, and is well worth checking out. You are greeted by a butcher counter worth oohing and ahhing over, and if you're nice, you will get a taste of one of their excellent pates. The menu is, of course, meat-centric, simple and mouthwatering. There are a few seafood items such as mussels, pan fried oysters, and a fish or two, but it's primarily of the hooves. Perfect veal sweetbreads left me craving more. I had the steak frites, which will vary on the night, tonight of hanger steak medium rare. It was butter, melting in the mouth good. So good as to be memorable. The fries were lovely. My mates polenta was the tastiest I've ever had, and the steak au poivre "bites" were delicious. I kept looking at the next table's dishes, which all looked equally excellent, especially the braised pork. Desserts are few and good, and they have a full bar, which is a bonus for many. Go here, and love it.
