While Andy & Bax doesn't deliver much for actual military gear, they do provide a lot of affordable knock-offs to protect against cold and rainy Portland winters.
Great Outdoor / Hardware Store.
This store has a great selection and great prices on non high end but mostly perfectly workable gear. Store employees can be hard to get a hold of when busy but are always helpful and informative when accessed. Furthermore, they totally lack the, "Too cool for school or at least you", attitude commonly found in the more shee shee stores in the Portland area.
Not every price is the lowest in town. When spending what to you is serious coin; do your research. They are also very cool about returns.
On a further note. If you are outfitting yourself as a GI Joe wannabee, maybe there are better places. Also, if you pay $5 for a Taiwanese knife, don't be surprised if it doesn't perform like a Benchmade costing 20 times more. (they have those too)
Still posers after all these years.
Every once in a while, since about 1980, we go back to see if they've changed. They haven't. Don't even bother with this place - go out to Boring or Aloha if you want surplus.
First, the cash register still just lists prices - twice we purchased a number of items; found a couple days later we didn't get all the items in the bags though we paid for them. Both times we took our receipt in & they acted like we were trying to rip them off - they got our money & we didn't get our items. They weren't even expensive ($7 highest) - you'd think someone would notice something left behind the counter but they don't bother with anything like organization.
Second, the prices on so many things (now they carry Condor - overpriced) are higher & sometimes much higher than you'll pay elsewhere. A few items are put out at low cost but these are usually poor quality (their blades are almost all bad Asian steel, for more $ than they're worth & more than you'd pay at the late great Joe's for example, if you want a cheap knife with a bendy-blade). A lot of Asian steel is good, but you won't find it here.
Third, there are some decent guys there but the manager & his pets are nasty as all get out - disagree with 'em even politely & you'll get a real dose of their attitude, which is arrogant. They seem to think they're doing me a favor by running a dirty, expensive store.
Fourth, their 'surplus' is godawful! It's always been peculiar, this last visit it looked like a bunch of stuff they'd picked up at a Goodwill & repriced for their own sale.
We keep hoping this place will change & it just gets more attitude as the years go on - that seems to be what it's all about now, the attitude & appearance, no substance.
Glorified sporting goods store. If you're into genuine military surplus at low prices, try Sgt. Gators at 12255 SE 282nd Ave. in Boring, OR. Andy & Bax has mostly civilian knock-offs of military issue gear at high prices. A lot of their stuff doesn't even pretend to be military; they're just plain old sporting goods. If you're clueless and want to "look cool," this is your nirvana.
Spend an hour or two browsing!.
This has been one of my favorite stores for over 15 years!
You will hear/read many different descriptions of what the store offers.
None of them will even come close to telling the whole truth.
I'll skip the obvious and let you in on some of the secrets...
Maps, they have a better selection of both useful and decorative maps than anywhere but an actuall map store.
Knives & Ninja weapons, plus other self defense and costume enhancements.
A whole Pirate section with flags, stickers, eye patches, etc.
Re-used and new wool clothing, an amazing selection, plus tons of rain gear.
Gloves! I buy almost all of gloves here.
Flashlights, cast iron cook ware, helmets, rope, bags and packs, on and on I could go.
This list is not just what they have to offer, that list is way, way bigger.
This list is they categories that they RULE in.
I don't buy these items anywhere else except in a pinch.
From surplus to supreme, Andy & Bax is awesome!
Editorial Review by Christy Buena. Army and Navy outdoors store specializes in a selection of equipment ranging from camouflage gear to rafting goods.
Kinda spooky. I feel like I'm in the Deliverance movie when I go into A&B, so I search and leave ASAP. It has a weird vibe in there, like they're hiding prisoners in closets, and I might be next. They do however have good prices.
FAST and COOL. I have been using Andy & Bax for almost 20 years. They have NEVER let me down. If they don't have it they will direct me to a place where I can, but that only happened once. The guys there are helpful when you need them, the store is a little on the dark side, but for the $$ they have I'll take the dark. I can't even tell you how much they have saved me over the years in $$$. GOOD JOB A&B!
Warm and Dry for pennies on the Dollar!. I have found some of my favorite outdoor clothes and equipment here. You can find things here that are not plastered with labels and advertisment, it is focused on the function. Visit once and make it a regular stop!
