Editorial Review for Michael's Italian Beef & Sausage Co. – by Clark Hays
In Short
The decor is bright and bold: Italian deli meets East Coast boardwalk in a distinctive, angular building trimmed with glass bricks. The dozen-plus tables fill up and turn quickly. Expect better-than-homemade pork roast sausages, meatballs, or marinated top round stuffed into Portland French bread rolls, then smothered with various combinations of tangy tomato sauce, au jus, sauteed onions, mild or hot peppers and layers of provolone.

First time today.Had a beef sandwich with peppers and grilled onions.Good roll but small. The meat was good but not spicy enough fo my taste.Perfect fries and a lot of them. Was hoping for a beer but was told that beer is served after 2 on week days and on Saturday? How weird is that? Will go back to try the sausage next time with a cold one.

I am not from Chicago. But if I were, and this is the native food, I'd be happy. The hot roast beef isn't for those who like rare, but it doesn't matter because the meat is tender and juicy and the au jus accompanying both the beef and sausage is amazing, as it sops the bread and drips down on your paper wrapping, in which you can use to dip your AMAZING French Fries. My son thought the fries were even better than those at In 'N Out., and that's saying a lot. I order a half beef with sauteed onions, and a half sausage with sauteed onions. Both are too good to combine and lose the nuances of each separately. I've been there at both lunch and dinner. The place was packed at lunch, and we were the only onces there on a Saturday night for dinner. I rather enjoyed the comments about the owner on this site. If he was there on this night, he must have been on Vicodin, because everyone there was quite kind.
Pros: Hot and juicy sandwiches. Perfect fries.
Cons: 5% surcharge for using a debit or credit card.
